East Oregonian
Nixyaawii student art on display at Maryhill
East Oregonian
Printmaking artwork by a
number of students from Nixy-
aawii Community School are
currently on display at Maryhill
Museum of Art.
In February 2015, Crow’s
Shadow Institute of the Arts in
Mission embarked on a collab-
orative project with Nixyaawii
to introduce local students to
printmaking. Over the past year
a select group of art students has
been learning printmaking in the
Crow’s Shadow studio under the
direction of Frank Janzen, Crow’s
Shadow master printer.
The students include Arlen
Blue Thunder, Sunshine Fuentes,
Frances Gomez Chalakee, Pete
Gomez
Chalakee,
Shandiin
Horton, EllaMae Looney, Nathan
Nez, Teata Oatman, L’Rissa
Sohappy and Shanae Williams.
They have been visiting one-two
times a week, building their
knowledge of linocut printmaking.
Each student has been
instructed in all the technical
aspects of the process and has
produced their own limited edition
prints. The resulting works have
been of remarkable quality and
exemplify the creative potential of
these talented young artists.
The collaborative project is
funded through a grant from the
Oregon Arts Commission Arts
Build Communities Fund.
Maryhill Museum invited prints
from this program to be exhibited
in the M.J. Murdock Charitable
Trust Education Center for the
spring of 2016.
“I am so excited to have
the students at Crow’s Shadow
learning about printmaking and
working in a professional arts
studio,” said Michelle Van Pelt,
arts coordinator at Nixyaawii.
Renowned local painter James

Game zone provides
science fun
MISSION — A fun family activity
for all ages features stations to
challenge visitors’ gaming skills and
knowledge of science.
The Evolution Game Zone is part
of the upcoming Pepsi Primetime @
the Museum. Set for Saturday, April 9
from 1-4 p.m. at Tamastslikt Cultural
Institute, located near Wildhorse Resort
& Casino, the event is free. In addition,
complimentary refreshments will be
served.
Visitors can explore the many
lines of evidence scientists use to
reconstruct the evolutionary histories
of organisms. Players will solve
mysteries, compare bones and DNA,
and look for fossils. Another station
feature players competing in a survival
game by keeping their species alive
in the changing environment. Also, a
microscope will be available to view
organisms.
The game zone is held in
conjunction with the current exhibit
at the cultural institute, Explore
Evolution.

Community School perfectly
encapsulates
the
institutes’s
mission statement.
“This project helps to strengthen
the relationship between Crow’s
Shadow and Nixyaawii High
School and extend our outreach
to a new generation of artists from
the local community,” Davis said.

PENDLETON — The Betty
Feves Memorial Art Gallery at Blue
Mountain Community College will
open a new exhibit Thursday with an
opening reception from 4:30-6:30 p.m.
“Shadows of the West” features the
work of Brian Sostrom in his ¿rst solo
show.
Sostrom’s work, layers of acrylic
paint on plexiglass, take their
inspiration from nature — cows,
skulls and desolate landscapes. The
atmospheric, ethereal paintings in
subtle hues have a different physical
presence depending on the light and
angle from which they are viewed.
“I love the imagery of nature but the
focus more speci¿cally is the paint
itself,” Sostrom said.
A Paci¿c Northwest native,
Sostrom earned a Bachelor of Fine
Arts from Washington State University,
majoring in graphic design with a
minor in painting. He has worked in
illustration, graphic design and the
video game industry. He currently lives
in Carnation, Wash.
The exhibit runs through April 28.
