PORTLAND
— The
stepson of notorious child
killer Ward Weaver has been
sentenced to life in prison for
his role in the killing of a mari-
juana dealer two years ago.
Francis Weaver was
sentenced Friday in Oregon
City, a couple days after he
was convicted of murder,
robbery and being a felon in
possession of a ¿rearm. Police
said Weaver provided the gun
that was used to shoot Edward
Spangler of Grants Pass in the
robbery-turned-homicide.
“I know he was a good
man, a very good man, and a
good son,” Weaver tearfully
told the victim’s family.
“That was never supposed to
happen.”
The killing extends the
history of Weaver murders to
a third generation.

of aggravated murder in
2004, two years after the
bodies of Ashley Pond and
Miranda Gaddis were found
in his backyard. Before the
discovery, the search for
the 12-year-old Pond and
13-year-old Gaddis riveted
Oregon for months and
landed the missing girls on
the cover of People magazine.
The case broke when
Francis Weaver, then 19,
called emergency dispatchers

for parole.

step-grandfather,
Ward
Weaver Jr., sits on Califor-
nia’s death row. In the 1980s,
he was convicted of killing a
man whose car had broken
down and of kidnapping,
raping and murdering the
man’s girlfriend. Her body
was found buried beneath a
deck at his home in Oroville,
California.
Francis Weaver was one
of four people convicted in
the 2014 case. The man who
police say pulled the trigger,
Michael Orren, has pleaded
guilty to aggravated murder,
and he will be sentenced
next month. Two others were
convicted of robbery and
sentenced to more than seven
years in prison.

Hunters who killed livestock
dogs ordered to pay $250,000
BEND (AP) — Two
brothers convicted of
killing livestock guardian
dogs while hunting in the
Ochocos have been ordered
to pay the dogs’ owner
nearly $250,000.
A Crook County jury on
Tuesday ordered Paul and
Craig Johnson to pay the
dogs’ owner after a civil
damages trial, The Bulletin
of Bend reported.
The brothers pleaded
no contest to a single count
each of misdemeanor animal
abuse and were sentenced to
probation and community
service in October 2013. The
brothers shot and killed three
Great Pyrenees sheepdogs.
They told a Crook County
sheriff’s deputy in 2012
that they believed they were
wild dogs.

were sheep in the area
and that they didn’t see
the signs. When they used
an elk bugle, the dogs
barked and ran toward
them. Considering the
circumstances, the Johnsons
thought they were wild
dogs.
The brothers have been
ordered to pay owner
Gordon Clark $7,500 for
the replacement value of the
dogs, $100,000 in emotional
harm and $139,500 in
punitive damages.
Leslie
would
not
comment whether he and his
client plan to ¿le an appeal.
Brendon Alexander, who
represented Paul Johnson
in the lawsuit, said they are
looking at their options in
terms of appeals.
Clark said the money
and favorable verdict don’t
make up for the deaths of
Elvira, Tony and Jackie
Chan, the three dogs killed
in 2012.
“I have a lot of dogs, but
these dogs were born in my
garage, and I raised them
for the ¿rst couple months
of their life,” Clark said,
adding later, “I wish it never
happened.”
