Gordon Smith often says he
is a member of a “fraternity of
sorrow.” It’s a club he hopes no
one else will have to join.
The former United States
senator from Pendleton appeared
Tuesday night at Blue Mountain
Community College as part
of this year’s Eastern Oregon
Forum series. He spoke on
“Living with the Challenges of
Mental Health.”
Smith’s journey into sorrow
began in 2003 with a knock on the
front door of his D.C. residence.
Councilor Becky Marks has faced oppo-
nents in her two previous bids and 2016 is no
different.
In addition to Marks, Renee Caubisens
and James Tibbets are also vying for the Ward
1 seat, which primarily covers the downtown
area, South Hill and Riverside.

Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian
Reservation from 1998-2010.
Caubisens has a bachelor’s degree from
State University of New York at New Paltz
and a law degree from Lewis & Clark
College.
Tibbets is a self-employed computer
repairman who previously applied for the
at-large council seat vacated by Jane Hill.
