Hermiston bomb hoaxer
pleads guilty
HERMISTON — A Hermiston man
who claimed he was trying to prank a
relative pleaded guilty to possessing a
hoax bomb.
Umatilla County Circuit Court
records show David U. Ponce, 23, of
Hermiston, is serving two years of
court probation for the stunt. Posses-
sion of hoax destructive device is a
Class A misdemeanor in Oregon.
Hermiston police on the morning
of Nov. 30, 2015, responded to 217
East Beebe Ave. for a report of a
bomb inside a garbage can, according
to Hermiston police Chief Jason
Edmiston. Of¿cers arrived and met
with an employee from Sanitary
Disposal who found a cardboard box
displaying the words “this is a bomb.”
The cops then questioned Ponce,
who lives at the address, and he
admitting to trying to play a joke on a
relative, according to Edmiston.
The chief also reported Hermiston
police had cited Ponce 62 times and
arrested him 29 before that day.
The police department asked for
help from the Oregon State Police
bomb squad to examine the box. All
it contained, according to Edmiston,
was a beer bottle. He also said the gag
kept cops on the scene for about three
hours.
Hermiston couple takes
plea in mistreatment case
HERMISTON — A Hermiston
couple pleaded guilty to theft and
avoided a trial where they also would
have faced 16 counts of ¿rst-degree
criminal mistreatment. They now have
to pay back more than $70,000.
The state accused Allen G. Iverson,
41, and his wife, Charlotte Iverson,
39, of Hermiston, of robbing Iverson’s
elderly stepfather, Robert Lee Friend,
from January 2012 through April
2013. The Umatilla County Sheriff’s
Of¿ce investigated the case and
search warrant af¿davits for bank
records show sheriff’s detective Kacey
Ward put the theft total at more than
$100,000.
The Iversons took a deal Feb. 24
and pleaded guilty to theft, according
to Umatilla County Circuit Court
Records. Circuit Judge Eva Temple
sentenced both to three years probation
and ordered them to not contact Friend.
The judge also ordered the Iversons
to pay Friend $71,068.
20-year-old turns to plea
deal in sex abuse case
HERMISTON — A California man
turning 21 this month plans to change
his plea on committing sex crimes in
Hermiston when he was a teen.
A Umatilla County grand jury in
September 2015 indicted Luis Alberto
Ramirez of Oxnard on two counts
of ¿rst-degree sodomy and eight of
¿rst-degree sexual abuse, according
to court records. The crimes involved
three victims and took place in 2010
and 2011. Ramirez pleaded not guilty
to the charges in October,
Court records show a psychological
evaluation in February determined
Ramirez could participate in his own
defense. His defense attorney then ¿led
a motion for a change of plea.
That hearing is Wednesday morning
in Hermiston in the courtroom of
Circuit Judge Eva Temple.

reported a burglary at her home on Hilltop

a Milton-Freewater dealership, but when he
tried to put the title into his name the state
licensing division told him no one had signed
off on the original title. He reported he spoke
with the dealer about it, who stated “the deal
was done and to take him to court.”
2:04 p.m. - A man reported someone is
dumping garbage and household materials
on his property at Canal Road between East
Highland Extension and Feedville Road,
Hermiston.

The 50-year-old driver from South
Carolina was going about 20 mph with the
rig’s compression release engine brake
on — or Jake Brake — when he noticed
noises and smoke, according to Oregon
State Police.
He stopped on the shoulder of the
highway, and others stopped to help him put

The trailer, which contained barrels of
“food product,” state police reported, only
sustained minor damage to wiring and brake
lines.
Police closed down both lanes of the
westbound freeway for about 45 minutes to

and a Pendleton contractor responded to
clean up diesel fuel.
The semi driver was uninjured.
16:50 p.m. - A Milton-Freewater woman
reported she had a county surveyor
determine the true property line, she has the
paperwork to prove it and is going ahead
with cutting the trees for the next few days.
Her neighbor, though, has been unhappy
about it, she said, and law enforcement
should be aware.
11:35 a.m. - An employee of the Taj Food
Mart, 84802 Highway 11, Milton-Freewater,
reported receiving a fake $100 bill.
ARRESTS, CITATIONS

arrested a man after a caller at 7:12 a.m.
reported a break-in and burglary at a shop
at 74261 Homestead Lane, Lexington,
belonging to Terra Poma Farms. The
caller said the suspect loaded items into
a pickup, and while there was a Spanish
language barrier, workers detained the
man.

provided, and booked him into the Umatilla
County Jail, Pendleton, for second-de-
gree burglary, breaking into a vehicle,
second-degree trespass and carrying a
concealed weapon.
Milton-Freewater police arrested Rick
Eugene Cooper, 50, of 109 S.E. East St.,
Prescott, Washington, for possession
of methamphetamine and on a Umatilla
County warrant for failure to appear.
