Jan. 22, 1916
The Columbia is two feet higher today
than yesterday but no damage has been done
and it is believed there is little danger. There is
still some ice jammed above Umatilla. Below
Umatilla there was an ice jam yesterday
extending a distance of 25 miles down stream.
So jammed was the ice in the river at Umatilla
that the stream was at an absolute standstill
for an hour. At one time 10 miles of ice came
down from farther up the river and caused the
stream to rise six feet. The Umatilla movable
dock was caught fast in the ice and the freight
had to be moved out. While working with a
windlass H.N. Dryer was struck twice and
knocked down. He was not seriously hurt.

Jan. 22, 1966
Two young men, Billy Rex Wesley Roulet,
19, and Edward H. Didion, 18, today were
charged with malicious and wanton injury to
personal property, a felony, after Pendleton
city police presented their cases to the district

the puncturing and slashing of 41 automobile
tires here Monday night, according to Police
Chief Ernest Gallaher. A third young man was
in a car the two boys allegedly occupied, but
Gallaher said he was not involved. Roulet
and Didion are in Pendleton to attend Blue
Mountain Community College. Didion was
arrested Friday afternoon and booked at the
county jail. A warrant was issued for Roulet
who was not yet under arrest this morning.

Jan. 22, 1991
The “guardian spirit” manifested in two
eagle feathers soon will be sent to Indian
brothers serving on separate ships in the
Persian Gulf. Like their father, uncles and
grandfathers before them, 20-year-old Navy
Airman Kippsootspayen “Kip” Lewis and his
older brother, 21-year-old Third Class Petty

freedom in time of war. The boys’ mother,
Etta Conner Scott, who lives on the Umatilla
Indian Reservation east of Pendleton, said
the eagle feathers, symbolizing strength,
must be prayed for and blessed before they
can be sent. Topped with blond strands of
horsehair attached to each with a silver circle,
the feathers came from the war dance regalia
her nephew wore during a sweathouse prayer
gathering by Indians on the Nez Perce Reser-
vation at Lapwai, Idaho, during the weekend.
Scott believes the feathers will help keep the
boys’ faith strong, but she said they are not
afraid.
