Baked items, jewelry, crafts offered by 20 vendors. The snack bar will be open and a chili lunch is available. By TAMMY MALGESINI East Oregonian Some of the tell-tale signs that the holiday season is approaching includes Christmas music, festive light displays and bazaars. Many area service clubs, fraternal groups and nonpro¿t organizations take advantage of people looking for gift ideas and presents. In Umatilla and Morrow counties, the bazaar season typically starts the ¿rst weekend in November, picks up speed after Thanksgiving and then dwindles as Christmas gets closer. Gert Hawthorne has organized an Autumn Bazaar for about ¿ve years at McKay Creek Estates in Pendleton. In addition, she makes arrangements for one in the late spring. A member of the Pendleton Relay for Life committee, Hawthorne’s motivation is to collect vendor fees to help in raising money for the American Cancer Society. Teresa Moncrief, recording secretary for the Hermiston Emblem Club, said •9 a.m. to 3 p.m. ‡:5RRVHYHOW$YH6WDQ¿HOG Free admission. Fall festival and quilt show, includes craft vendors and a taco soup lunch. Hermiston Elks Lodge the organization has hosted its Holiday Bazaar for at least 10 years. Money raised by the group, which is an auxiliary of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, goes to help with many community causes. Among them, Moncrief said, are Domestic Violence Services, Vange John Memo- rial Hospice, the Hermiston Police Department Christmas Express and Hermiston Public Library programs. In addition, the group provides schol- arships at the local, state and national level. “We really believe in educating our kids,” Moncrief said. Hawthorne used to sell Home Inte- riors and Gifts and would host open houses with other direct sales consul- tants. The idea of hosting a bazaar with home business vendors sprang from that, she said. Hawthorne has many regulars that participate in both the fall and spring bazaars. To solicit additional vendors, Hawthorne utilized the Pendleton classi- ¿eds on Facebook. Also, this year three of the residents at McKay Creek are setting up table space. Moncrief is excited about the mix of items available at the Emblem Club’s bazaar — everything from baked goods to creative crafts and unique gift items. “We have some fun stuff this year,” she said. ——— Submit bazaar information, including date, time, place, and if there’s an admission fee, to: community@ eastoregonian.com or drop off to the attention of Tammy Malgesini at 333 E. Although it may not be possible to provide community briefs for all upcoming bazaars, information is placed on the Coming Events calendar, which typically runs daily in the print edition.
