Former West German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt dies at age 96

BERLIN (AP) — Helmut
Schmidt, the chancellor who guided
West Germany through economic
turbulence and Cold War tensions,
stood ¿rm against a wave oI
homegrown terrorism and became
a respected elder statesman, died
Tuesday. He was 96.
Schmidt died at his house in
Hamburg, according to German
weekly Die Zeit, oI which Schmidt
was a co-publisher.
“We have lost a sharp-witted
adviser, a trusted companion and
a good Iriend,´ Die Zeit said in
a statement. “Until recently he
contributed to the editorial team with
his analyses, his commentaries and
his interviews about current aIIairs.´

the Iormer chancellor died with
partner Ruth Loah and daughter
Susanne at home with him.
“He died the way he wanted: in
his bed at home and Iully without
pain,´ Greten said.

As a new leader, Schmidt brought
a sometimes abrasive selI-con¿-
dence and his experience as West
Germany’s deIense, ¿nance and
economy ministers to the job, which
he took during the economic down-
turn that Iollowed the 197 oil crisis.
Schmidt’s chancellorship coin-
cided with a tense period in the Cold
War, including the Soviet Union’s
1979 invasion oI AIghanistan.
Born Dec. 2, 1918, the son oI
a halI--ewish school teacher in the
northern city oI Hamburg, Schmidt
joined the Hitler Youth when his
rowing team was included in the

DraIted as a soldier during World
War II, Schmidt’s unit was deployed
in the Soviet Union in 1941. He was
sent to the western Iront at the end
oI the war and taken as prisoner by
British Iorces in April 1945. He was
released that August.
Schmidt later said that, as a young
soldier, he had recognized the Nazi
regime’s lunacy but not its criminal
nature at ¿rst.
Schmidt entered West Germany’s
parliament in 195, where he earned
the nickname “Schmidt the Lip,´ a
tribute to his sharp-tongued debating
skills.
It was not easy Ior Schmidt
being between the world’s two
superpowers — the United States
and the Soviet Union. Schmidt’s
chancellorship ended with his ouster
in a parliamentary vote in October
1982.
AIter stepping down as a
lawmaker in 1987, Schmidt devoted
himselI to working as co-publisher
oI the weekly newspaper Die Zeit.
