SPORTS Tuesday, October 20, 2015 East Oregonian Page 3B Saturday College Roundup Blocked punt spoils win for Mountaineers EOU netters upset by Northwest on Saturday. East Oregonian LA GRANDE — On Saturday afternoon, the Eastern Oregon Mountaineers were not able to hang onto a fourth quarter lead, as a blocked punt and subsequent touch- down return gave the Montana Western Bulldogs the 30-23 win to spoil EOU homecoming. Eastern Oregon (2-5, 2-4) took a 23-22 lead when running back Jace Billingsley plunged into the end zone from one-yard out with 7:17 remaining in the fourth quarter. But Montana Western grabbed the lead back — for good this time — when linebacker Dakota Wainwright blocked an EOU punt and returned it 36 yards for the touchdown. “I’m disappointed for our players and coaches, but I know our fans are sick about it and I don’t blame them,” head coach Tim Camp told EOUSports.com Billingsley had a good game out of the back¿eld, rushing for 100 yards and the touchdown on 22 carries. He also completed one pass for 68 yards and a touchdown to Joshua Richards on a trick play in the ¿rst quarter to give the Moun- taineers an early 7-0 lead. Mountaineers quarterback Zach Bartlow completed 25 of his 34 pass attempts for 204 yards with one touchdown and one intercep- tion. He also rushed for 40 yards on 10 carries. The Bulldogs (4-2, 4-2) won the battle with their ground game, as six players combined for 223 rushing yards in the game. EOU will look to rebound next week against Montana State- Northern in Havre, Montana at 1 p.m. Volleyball NORTHWEST 3, EOU 2 — At Kirkland, Wash., the Northwest University Eagles took the No. 7 ranked Eastern Oregon Mountain- eers to ¿ve sets and pulled off the upset with a 15-10 win in the ¿fth set on Saturday. It marks the ¿st loss for the Mountaineers (19-2, 14-1 CCC) since losing to Rocky Mountain College way back on Aug. 29, ending a 15-match winning streak. Northwest (14-7, 10-5 CCC) won the ¿rst set 25-22, the third set 25-23, and the ¿fth 15-10. EOU won the second set 25-21 and the fourth set 25-16. Emily Nay led the Mountaineers with 16 kills while Amanda Miller added 15 kills. Rachelle Chamber- lain contributed 51 assists, and Tylo ColÀesh and Holli Mullins led the Men’s Basketball defense as they tied with 17 digs. The Mountaineers hit the court again on Oct. 23 when they host Multnomah at Quinn Coliseum at 7 p.m. EOU 96, VANCOUVER ISLAND 84 — At Vancouver Island, the Mountaineers came back on Saturday to split the two-game series with Vancouver. The Mountaineers shot 48.6 percent from the Àoor in the game and led by as much as 17 points in the game. Senior Chase Rada led the team with 20 points and six assists. “We could and should have come away with two wins this weekend, but we learned a lot about ourselves,” head coach Jared Barrett told EOUSports.com. “Traveling to Canada was a lot of fun, and the guys really came together and bonded on the trip.” EOU next hits the court again on Oct. 23 in Redding, California against Simpson University at 7 p.m. BLUE MOUNTAIN TIMBERWOLVES — At Salem, the Timberwolves split a pair of Saturday matches in the Chemeketa Crossover Tournament, defeating Highline 3-0 before losing to Chemeketa 3-1 to ¿nish in third place for the tournament. Against Highline, Blue Moun- tain (33-8, 10-0) won with scores of 25-11, 25-14, and 25-14. Then against Chemeketa Blue Mountain won the second set 25-22 but dropped three sets with scores of 25-22, 25-18, and 27-25. No other details were reported. Blue Mountain next plays at North Idaho College on Tuesday at 6 p.m. ALCS: Cueto allows eight runs in three innings for Royals Continued from 1B everybody has with everybody is amazing.” Seemingly not distracted by the contentious federal elections being held in Canada on Monday, 49,751 fans serenaded Cueto with a sing- song “Cueto-Cueto!” chant from the game’s ¿rst pitch and never quieted down. The Royals took a quick lead when Alcides Escobar opened the game with a triple and scored on Ben Zobrist’s grounder. But that was the only advantage Kanas City held in having its nine-game ALCS winning streak snapped. The string dated to the 1985 series against Toronto. Blue Jays center ¿elder Kevin Pillar quashed the early rally with a fantastic, over-the-shoulder catch that sent him crashing into the wall. After an easy ¿rst, Cueto appeared Àustered by the crowd. Eleven of his remaining 13 batters reached and at one point in the third inning he threw his hands up in frustration after gesturing for a new cycle of signs from catcher Salvador Perez. Goins singled in two runs in the second after Tulowitzki singled with one out and Russell Martin was hit by a pitch that knocked off his left elbow guard. Goins pulled into second on the throw home and shouted and pumped his arms. “There’s no need to put any extra pressure on yourself,” Goins said when asked if he was looking for redemption. “Just come out and do what I’ve been doing all season — whatever I can do to help this team win is what I’m going to do.” David Price, the losing pitcher in Game 2, led the cheering from the top step of the dugout. When Goins scored on Donald- son’s hit, he was greeted ¿rst by the enthusiastic Stroman. “He’s been carrying that load around a little bit,” Gibbons said of Goins. “But he stepped up, really got us on the board with that great at-bat, picking up those two runs, base hit to left and then, of course, the home run.” Nursing a sore shoulder that side- lined him in September, Tulowitzki entered in a 4-for-29 postseason slump. But he connected for the Blue Jays’ ¿rst ALCS homer after Edwin Encarnacion singled and Chris Colabello walked to start the third. “Battling with the shoulder at times, but trying to gut it out,” Tulowitzki said. Cueto was coming off a domi- nant, eight-inning performance in Game 5 of the ALDS, retiring his last 19 batters. But after giving up Pillar’s RBI double in the third, he was done. The dreadlocked Dominican gave up six hits and eight runs in two-plus innings. He walked four and hit a batter with a pitch. As fans sang Cueto off the ¿eld, he smiled and tossed his gum near the Royals dugout. “That’s just part of my DNA. That’s what comes out, but there wasn’t any laughing about it,” he said through a translator. Donaldson connected for a 9-2 lead two batters after Kris Medlen entered. Goins homered off Medlen in the ¿fth as Toronto matched its postseason best with three homers in a game. The Blue Jays also hit three against Texas in Game 4 of the ALDS. Stroman gave up four runs and 11 hits in 6 1-3 innings. The 24-year-old returned from a torn knee ligament in March to go 4-0 down the stretch and get the win in Game 5 of the ALDS. Blue Jays fans were con¿dent enough with a 10-4 lead to sing “Happy Birthday” to Jose Bautista when he came to bat in the sixth.
