SPORTS Saturday, October 3, 2015 East Oregonian Page 3B MLB Keuchel wins 20th, Astros set runs record to rout D-backs berth by routing the Arizona Diamondbacks 21-5 Friday night. The Astros have won ¿ve of six and held their one-game edge over the Los Angeles Angels for the second AL wild-card spot. Minnesota fell two behind. Houston trails West leader By BOB BAUM Associated Press PHOENIX — Dallas Keuchel became the AL’s ¿rst 20-game winner and the Houston Astros backed him with the highest-scoring game in team history, moving closer to a playoff Texas by two games with two to play. Keuchel (20-8) gave up two runs on six hits in six innings, becoming the Astros’ ¿rst 20-game winner since Roy Oswalt went 20-12 in 2005. The AL wild-card game is scheduled for Tuesday, and the Yankees have already clinched a spot. If Keuchel pitched, it would mark the ¿rst time the All-Star lefty has started on three days’ rest. Carlos Correa hit a solo homer, bases-loaded triple and singled, and scored four times. George Springer, Colby Rasmus and Luis Valbuena homered as Houston surpassed its previous high of 19 runs set twice, most recently against Pittsburgh in 1999. Springer and Rasmus also scored four times each as the Astros got a season-high 19 hits. Keuchel is the 10th Astros pitcher, and second Houston left-hander, to win 20. Lefty Mike Hampton was 22-4 in 1999. Keuchel is the second 20-game winner in the majors. The Chicago Cubs’ Jake Arrieta won his 22nd on Friday. Carlos Zacharias went off for 220 yards and two scores on 10 totes, and Austin Rice added two touchdowns on an 8-for-35 night. Nathan Verley was 4 for 5 passing for 74 yards and touchdown to Vera. Irrigon coach Steve Sheller said Culver was able to keep pace in the ¿rst half thanks to the running of Jaden Jones, but a defensive substitution on the line made things tough on him in the second half. “Jaden Jones had a heck of a night, we had a hard time tackling him,” Sheller said. “We played better defense in second half and part of that was because of kid named Parker Gale that we put in to play D tackle. He plugged it up pretty good for us.” Irrigon hosts Stan¿eld next week in a battle of unbeaten teams. IRRIGON 60, CULVER 54 — At Culver, the Knights survived to remain unde- feated in a their Columbia Basin Conference opener and also guaranteed the ¿rst winning season in Irrigon football history. After the Cougars and Badgers went to the locker room tied at six, Powder Valley scored twice on big plays in the third quarter and held off a late Echo charge. Echo (2-3, 0-2), which was playing without starting quarterback Klay Jenson, out-gained the Badgers 307-186 and forced two Powder Valley turnovers. But Echo killed its own drives with turnovers or penalties. Damien Curiel led Echo with 125 yards and a touch- down on nine carries, and Devan Craig also carried 15 times for 65 yards and a touchdown. Head coach Rick Thew had much praise for senior Hayden Sather, who led Echo with 15 tackles, six of which were for loss and three of which were sacks. Coach Dieter Waite said his team ¿nally adjusted to the new lineup by the third set, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a very good Union team as the Bobcats (12-4) won 25-13, 25-14, 31-29. “We ¿nally kind of got comfortable with the rotation and passing and played them very tough,” Waite said of the third set.
