PORTLAND — Excited
shoppers looking to score
some of the ¿rst recreational
marijuana sold legally in
Oregon bought up baggies
of bud early Thursday, taking
advantage of door-buster
prices and other deals.
Some of the more than
250 dispensaries that already
offer medical marijuana in the
state welcomed recreational
users soon after midnight —
just moments after it became
legal to sell to anyone who is
at least 21.
At Shango Premium
Cannabis
in
Portland,
co-founder Shane McKee
said the ¿rst sale came about
a minute after midnight
and many others quickly
followed.
“I think it’s not only
historical for folks in Oregon,
but nationwide — anytime
people start selling that as
an alternative to alcohol or
tobacco,” he said in a tele-
phone interview.
Brad Zusman, co-owner of
Canna Daddy’s in Portland,
said more than 90 customers
bought pot in the ¿rst two
hours after the store opened
at 7 a.m.
He said customers told

ington state, where pot shops
have been up and running
for more than a year. Alaska
could begin retail sales next
year.

land had a couple hundred
customers since opening just
after midnight, shop manager
Ken Martin said.
“It’s just been a steady
Àow,” he said, adding that
employees repeatedly re¿lled
jars with pot to meet the
demand.

in had just turned 21, he said.

with extended hours, food

incentive to buy early and
often: Under Oregon law,
pot purchases will be tax-free
until January — a savings of
up to 20 percent.
Store owners say they are
hopeful they can avoid the
shortages and price spikes
that followed the start of legal
sales last year in Washington
and Colorado. Alaska could
begin retail sales next year.
One store offered a goody
bag with T-shirts, but no free
marijuana. Another will have
a live band and 10 percent
discounts.
Several stores have erected
billboards in Portland. A shop
in Merlin is advertising on
the radio.
“I’m just trying to basi-
cally stock up for maybe four
or ¿ve times what the normal
volume would be,” said Chris
Byers, owner of River City
Dispensary in Merlin.

Ex-police volunteer who stole
guns sentenced to prison
Bakery refuser to pay damages
in gay wedding cake case
GRANTS PASS (AP) — A former
southern Oregon police volunteer who stole
dozens of guns from police evidence rooms
has been sentenced to a year and a half in
prison.
The Daily Courier reports 74-year-old
Lee Darrow lost his bid for probation and
was sentenced Tuesday. He pleaded guilty in
September to theft and tampering charges.
Darrow had previously served as an
evidence volunteer with the Grants Pass
Department of Public Safety when a routine
internal audit in 2014 found that several
guns were missing. The Oregon State Police
determined that 43 guns had gone missing
from evidence.
Authorities later located several of the
guns in Darrow’s home. Other guns had been
given to his family members.
Darrow has been ordered to pay nearly
$2,700 in restitution to the city of Grants
Pass.
PORTLAND (AP) — The owners of a
Portland-area bakery are refusing to pay
$135,000 in state-ordered damages to a
same-sex couple who were refused service.
Melissa and Aaron Klein, owners of
Sweet Cakes by Melissa, cited religious
beliefs when they refused to bake a wedding
cake for Laurel and Rachel Bowman-Cryer
more than two years ago.
Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian
awarded the damages in July for emotional
suffering, saying the owners had violated
the women’s rights by discriminating on the
basis of their sexual orientation.
The Kleins have ¿led an appeal of the
ruling and are defying the order to pay.
They’re claiming ¿nancial hardship although
crowdfunding efforts have brought in over
$500,000 on their behalf.
The Oregonian reports state of¿cials have
asked to place a lien on the Kleins’ property
or other assets.
