A funeral and Catholic mass will be held at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, September 12, 2015, in his hometown of Muzquiz, Spain. A Basque wake and Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 26, 2015, at the Pend- leton Elks Lodge #288. There will be a private family burial at Eagle Valley Cemetery in Richland, Oregon. Mario was born April 26, 1929, in Zubiria Muzquiz, Spain, to Manuel and Maria Zubiria. He attended school in his hometown and at 18 years old he was drafted into the Spanish Army and spent two years serving in northern Africa. He came to the United States in 1959 on a three- year work visa and began working for Cunningham Sheep Company. On December 8, 1961, he married Darla Wilson in Boise, Idaho. After they were married, they moved to Hermiston and then to Pendleton where they lived the rest of their lives. After working for Cunningham Sheep, he worked many years falling timber in Eastern Oregon. He started Mario’s Basque Bar-B-Q in the early 1980s and had a very successful catering business and career until he retired in 2012, but he was still the boss! Mario had a long-term business relationship with the Pendleton Round-Up for over 25 years. He was the Basque behind the BBQ with his very familiar face, always feeding the Round-Up crowds his well- known lamb kabobs at that famous Let ‘Er Buck place! Mario loved people and he cherished his family and friends immensely. He liked traveling back to Spain to visit his family. He also enjoyed hunting, ¿shing and puttering around his meat room. His favorite TV show was “Two and a Half Men” (Charlie Sheen version, of course) and he loved to watch the Golf Channel. Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law Lisa and David Hamilton of Pendleton; son Tony Zubiria of Pendleton; grandsons Andy Austin of Pendleton, Tim Austin of Yarnell, Ariz., and Nicolas Zubiria of Pendleton; grand- daughters Alison Zubiria of Pendleton and Molly Hamilton of Pendleton; great-grandson Waylon Austin of Yarnell, Ariz.; sister Paquita Zubiria of Pamplona, Spain; brother Nicasio Zubiria of Muzquiz, Spain; sisters Nieves Zubiria and Milagros Zubiria of Pamplona, Spain; and brother Jeronimo Zubiria of Pendleton. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and sister Teresa Zubiria.
