Located in the 600 block of South- west Fourth Street in Pendleton, the couple turned their house into a beacon of patriotism, said Donna Bradbury, secretary of the auxiliary. Their house is painted in patriotic colors with the American Àag and a service Àag hung on each side of the porch. “The Mikkelsens have set an example for that neighborhood and most of the neighbors are now displaying Àags,´ Bradbury said. “This year they organized a Fourth of July block party.´ The auxiliary thanks all citizens and families for Àying the Àag of our nation. If you or someone you know in Pendleton Àies the American Àag on a daily basis, the Pendleton VFW Ladies Auxiliary is looking for them. Notify them by calling Bradbury at 541-969- 9174, dbradbury70@yahoo.com or auxiliary president Carolyn Pearson at 541-310-9645. Photo contributed by Erin Heideman Sen. Photo contributed by Donna Bradbury Michiel and Jeri Mikkelsen received the July Patriotic Citizen Award from Carolyn Pearson, Rachel Eastman of the Ladies Auxiliary of Veteran’s of Foreign Wars Let’er Buck Post 922, Pendleton. Uncle Bill brings home the bacon A family tradition continued as Jake Heideman, an eighth grader at Ione Community School, recently showed and sold his market pig at the Morrow County Fair. The pig was named UB in honor of Heideman’s uncle Bill — Sen. Bill Hansell. Hansell attended the show to see how his namesake fared and to see if UB would bring home the bacon. As a kid, Jake’s mother, Erin Heideman, named several pigs Uncle Bill, and in turn, his children named their pigs Uncle Ty to honor Heideman’s late father, Ty Hansell. All in all, there were 11 cousin who showed pigs, Erin Heideman said, and Jake is the ¿rst of the next generation to do so. This is his fourth year as a member of Ione Community 4-H Club. He’s also a member of the Ione FFA Chapter. The son of Erin and Deacon Heideman of Ione, Jake also plays football, basketball and track, and is in the band. With about two months of practice, the vintage routine was choreographed by Bev Weiss Cary. Due to advanced ages of 68 years, some pulled the routine off like Rockettes and others looked more like West- side Story — with no rhyme or reason, said Suzi Pell Norris. In addition to Cary and Norris, others who participated included, Candy Cook, Sherrie Hawkins, Vicki Chaney Krumbien, Renee Rogers and Jill Reed Pursel. Three judges were former Buckerettes, Trudy Irwin Bigbsy, recovering from E. coli; Michelle Kraber, nursing a broken ankle from a horse accident; and Ginny Kletzer, recovering from hip surgery. Biology students cruise with bike club grant Contributed photo Schelle Bixler, Pendleton High School biology teacher, receives a donation from Christine Guenther, president of Pendleton on Wheels. More than 50 Pendleton High School honors biology students participated in a class ¿eld trip to the Oregon coast. The May trip was partially supported by Pendleton on Wheels, who donated $500 for Schelle Bixler’s students to spend three days applying what they learned in class studying marine life. The donation helped cover transportation costs. Also, earlier in the spring, POW donated $4,000 to the Pendleton Little League baseball program. The money was used to build a new clubhouse. The bicycle club raised the money through proceeds from the 2014 NW Tandem Rally held in Pendleton. Elizabethan Manor receives recognition for health care Prestige Care Inc., a provider of senior living and skilled nursing and rehabilitation care services, recently announced Elizabe- than Manor earned the 2015 Bronze. The Pendleton facility won the award, which recognizes commitment to quality from the American Health Care Association and the National Center for Assisted Living under the National Quality Award program. Twelve additional Prestige Care facilities also received Bronze Quality status. “The National Quality Awards set the bar for our industry, and consumers look to programs like this to help guide their decisions in choosing a care provider,´ said Harold Delamarter, founding partner and CEO of Prestige Care. Delamarter said the recognition speaks to the compassionate, high-quality care the team provides every day in its communities and centers. Organizations apply for recognition and awards at three levels, each of which requires a more detailed and comprehensive demonstra- tion of quality integration and performance. Award levels are based on the Baldrige Perfor- mance Excellence Program criteria, which review critical aspects of an organization’s quality performance and management. The 2015 AHCA/NCAL National Quality Award recipients will be recognized at the 66th Annual Convention and Exposition, Oct. 4-7 in San Antonio. Stu is a very large cat with extra toes on both front feet. He is very loving and cuddly, but also laid back, maybe a little cautious. He is currently rooming with many other cats, and seems to get along with everyone. He is mostly tolerant of small children and loud noises, but has basically lived with seniors. He is neutered, up to date on vaccinations, and tested negative for FeLV. Stu is quite the social butterfly and could be your "burp" baby due to the fact he likes to ride around draped over your shoulder! Stu also enjoys taking car rides and playing with his toys.
