THURSDAY
•An Irrigon resident at 5:24
a.m. reported the theft of his
red Honda all-terrain vehicle
from his home on Columbia
Lane.
•A female in a red shirt at
about 9:30 a.m. threw rocks
at a black Jeep Cherokee
on Mountain View Drive,
Boardman, and yelled at the
vehicle’s driver, who headed
out of town with a broken back
window.
•A caller at 9:52 a.m.
reported a burglary and theft at
the Milton Thrift Store, 84723
Highway 11, Milton-Freewater.
Multiple items are gone, the
caller said, but some will be
easy to identify. The caller also
said the culprit took the store’s
security system.
•Pendleton police at 1:25
p.m. received a request to
respond to the 2300 block of
Southeast Court Avenue for
accumulation of trash.
•A caller with the city of
Adams at 1:58 p.m. reported
someone shoved a full soda
can into the library return box
at public library, 190 Main St.,
and damaged the box. The
caller also said there was
surveillance video of the crime.
•A caller at about 2 p.m.
reported a male urinated “all
over that house” on Northeast
Elder Street, Heppner, and
also trashed the place.
•A caller at 2:03 p.m.
reported the theft of a
30-gallon air compressor from

that Cordes, on the day of the incident,
had found out more information about
that.”
Cordes and Norquist, who had been
friends for nearly 20 years, had come
to an impasse in the relationship after
Cordes assaulted him in January, Norquist
told police. Court records show that the
two men came to a civil compromise in
April, which essentially meant Norquist
dropped the fourth-degree assault charge
against his landlord.
Together, combined with a polygraph
test administered by an Oregon State
Police examiner, these pieces of evidence
were stronger than evidence supporting a
murder charge — or even a lesser charge
such as manslaughter, Hummel said.
During the January incident, Cordes
had allegedly entered Norquist’s apart-

same bed, and reacted violently.
During the walk-through, Norquist
told investigators he didn’t know why
he didn’t simply run away. Shortly
before the confrontation in the upstairs
hallway, Norquist said, both men used
the bathroom: Norquist upstairs and
Cordes downstairs. Though that would
have been an opportunity to leave the
house, he acknowledged, he didn’t think
Cordes was really threatening him until
the confrontation in the hallway.
