Passport to Japan opens
at Children’s Museum

Visitors to the Children’s
Museum of Eastern Oregon
can get their passports to
Japan stamped.
A new exhibit for the
month of August features
a glimpse of contemporary
Japanese life through a
Japanese child’s bedroom. A
group effort with the city of
Pendleton brings to life how a
typical child in Minamisoma,
Japan — Pendleton’s sister
city — would sleep, dress and
eat.
Intended to entertain and
educate, Passport to Japan
highlights similarities and
differences between Japanese
and American cultures. Visi-
tors can dress in traditional
Japanese attire, role play with
Japanese cuisine and discover
shared interests, such as
baseball and Hello Kitty.
In addition to learning
about Japanese culture, kids
and their families can meet
the six exchange students
from Minamisoma Monday
at 10 a.m. at the museum, 400
S. Main St., Pendleton. Those
in attendance also can exper-
iment with Japanese writing
called Kanji using traditional
calligraphy brushes, as well
as learn to say a few Japanese
words and phrases.

whiskey and vodka will take place at 8 p.m.
Saturday at the Chute 8 venue at the Farm-
City Pro Rodeo grounds in Hermiston. The
new brand launched earlier this year, and the
rodeo will receive royalties from the sales.
The 80-proof American whiskey is a
blend of two whiskeys: a rye grain and a
malt blend of rye grain, corn and barley. The
80-proof vodka is made from corn distillate.
Portland-based Indio Spirits created the
drinks.
UMATILLA — Registration for all three
schools in the Umatilla School District will
take place Aug. 18-20.

Brownell Middle School will be open from
8 a.m. to 2 p.m. while McNary Heights
Elementary School will be open from 8 a.m.

of charging base fees at the beginning of the
month, the city is now charging those fees
at the beginning of the following month for
services that have been used.
The change resulted in a small August
bill because residents were only charged for
water usage during July. Residents will pay
the base fees for water, sewer and garbage
and the public safety fee for the month of
August on the bill issued at the beginning of
September.

at the pump and failed to properly disclose its prices when
it charged a 35-cent fee to consumers who used debit cards
to pay for gas at Oregon ARCO stations and ampm locations.
BPWCP has denied the claims in this case and plans to appeal
the jury verdict.
