Smoke envelopes the small town of Roosevelt, Wash., as a wind-swept wildfire burned through the area
Tuesday on the Columbia River north of Arlington. According to the Associated Press, Klickitat County
authorities evacuated the entire town of Roosevelt Tuesday night. No buildings had been destroyed by press
time, but the fire had jumped over State Route 14. Roosevelt is located on the banks of the Columbia River
across from Arlington. It has a population of fewer than 200 people.

In this Aug. 3, photo, a firefighter uses a helmet to refill a water bag
from a small pond while fighting a fire near the South Jetty at Fort
Stevens State Park in Warrenton. Due to the location of the fire, trucks
couldn’t get close, so crews used local water sources when possible.
