Cooper DQ’d at Calgary Stampede CALGARY, Alberta — World champion tie-down roper and third-generation rodeo star Tuf Cooper has been eliminated from the Calgary Stampede for “mistreatment of livestock” following his run in Wednesday’s FACES performance. Video of the run shows the former Farm- City champion and Round-Up ¿ nalist striking his horse on the Cooper haunches six times with his rope, three on each side, as he attempts to catch up to his calf, which he failed to lasso. “The six judges, along with Calgary Stampede of¿ cials, unanimously made the decision to disqualify Cooper after seeing him repeatedly and aggressively using his rope on his horse during the run,” said Stampede spokeswoman Kristina Barnes in a press release. It is believed to be the ¿ rst time a contestant has been eliminated from the rodeo for that type of infraction. Cooper’s agent Shawn Wiese told CTV Calgary his client accepts the decision, but added Cooper “treats his horses like kids and would never intentionally hurt an animal.” “We spend a good deal of time educating our student-athletes about appropriate behavior and their responsibilities as representatives of Florida State. It was a night for celebration as the Hall of Fame welcomed its six newest individuals, and a 1961 squad that has been unmatched to this day, in enshrinement. Excited voices could be heard coming from all corners of Pend- leton Convention Center as players past and present and their families gathered to pay homage to 2015 inductees Todd Knopp, Rollin Schimmel, Edgar Hargrow, Monte Byford, Earl Jambura and Jay Lilly. But between the laughs and smiles were some somber moments, due mostly to Byford and Schim- mel’s posthumous induction. Byford, a three-year starter and versatile defensive stalwart on the 1972-74, was killed in a car accident in 1976. Schimmel, who served as Don Requa’s offensive line coach for more than 20 years, died in a river rafting accident in 2006. His son Randy Schimmel, who was in the 2014 Hall of Fame class, spoke on his father’s behalf. “A lot of people start off by talking to me about, ‘Oh, I wish he was here.’ Which that kind of makes it pretty tough,” Schimmel said. “But after you get past that you start thinking about what he did for the youth and the community, and you know he taught us all a lot. So you quickly move into a happy mode of what he did for us, and it’s pretty cool.” See BUCKAROOS/2B MLB Angels rough up Montgomery Trout, Cron both homer twice By JIM HOEHN Associated Press SEATTLE — Mike Trout and C.J.
