Buckaroos enshrine seven in 2015 class
Hall of Fame
banquet reunites
old teammates
By MATT ENTRUP
East Oregonian
The good far outweighed the bad
as memories came À ooding back at
the sight of familiar faces, and in
some cases name tags, on Friday at
the annual Buckaroo Hall of Fame
banquet and induction ceremonies.
It was a night for celebration
as the Hall of Fame welcomed its
six newest individuals, and a 1961
squad that has been unmatched to
this day, in enshrinement.
Excited voices could be heard
coming from all corners of Pend-
leton Convention Center as players
past and present and their families
gathered to pay homage to 2015
inductees Todd Knopp, Rollin
Schimmel, Edgar Hargrow, Monte
Byford, Earl Jambura and Jay Lilly.
But between the laughs and
smiles were some somber moments,
due mostly to Byford and Schim-
mel’s posthumous induction.
Byford, a three-year starter and
versatile defensive stalwart on the
1972-74, was killed in a car accident
in 1976. Schimmel, who served as
Don Requa’s offensive line coach
for more than 20 years, died in a
river rafting accident in 2006.
His son Randy Schimmel, who
was in the 2014 Hall of Fame class,
spoke on his father’s behalf.
“A lot of people start off by
talking to me about, ‘Oh, I wish he
was here.’ Which that kind of makes
it pretty tough,” Schimmel said.
“But after you get past that you start
thinking about what he did for the
youth and the community, and you
know he taught us all a lot. So you
quickly move into a happy mode of
what he did for us, and it’s pretty
cool.”

the CONCACAF Gold Cup on

from about 12 yards.

of Landon Donovan’s American
record.
The Americans have won six
in a row, are 30-1-2 in Gold Cup
group play and have reached
the knockout stage of all 13
Gold Cup tournaments. They
have one game remaining in the
group stage, against Panama on
Monday in Kansas City, Kansas.
Haiti, which is 0-1-1, will
play Honduras on Monday, with
the loser ¿ nishing last in the
group.
The U.S. nearly went ahead
in the 34th minute, when Aron
Johannsson beat goalkeeper
Johny Placide. Johannsson was
ruled offside, but replays showed
he was onside when Altidore
passed the ball to him.
U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann
switched the formation from
4-4-2 to 4-3-1-2 and changed
seven starters, including his
entire defensive line. Brad
Evans was at right back, with
Tim Ream and Omar Gonzalez
the central defenders and Garza
at left back.
Mix Diskerud was in mid¿ eld
and twice committed fouls that
gave Haiti free kicks just outside
the penalty area.
The Portland Trail Blazers are
forcing the Oklahoma City Thunder to
make a big decision with center Enes
Kanter.
The Blazers have signed Kanter to
a four-year, $70 million offer sheet, a
person with direct
knowledge of the
situation told The
Associated Press.
The person spoke
on
condition
of
anonymity
because the Trail
Blazers did not
announce
the
terms of the offer.
Kanter
Kanter is a
restricted
free
agent, which leaves the Thunder three
days to decide whether they will match
the offer and retain their big man or let
him go to Portland.
Oklahoma City acquired Kanter in
a trade with the Utah Jazz last season,
and the fourth-year pro averaged 18.7
points and 11.0 rebounds in 26 games
