DAYS GONE BY 100 Years Ago From the East Oregonian July 6-7, 1915 Helix was a celebration center yesterday and patriotic spirit ran rampant over the town. Hundreds of people from over the countryside joined with the residents in commemorating the birth of the nation with ¿tting festivities and from early morning until late at night the celebrants were active, despite a disagreeable wind that rather marred the day. The of¿cial program began at 10 o’clock with a parade of decorated vehicles. A patriotic program at 11 o’clock was followed by a sports program in the afternoon. In the foot racing the sensation of the day was John Mills, who took ¿rst in the 50 and 100 yard dashes, ¿rst in the 220 relay and second in the 440. An interesting game of baseball between the Touchet Red Sox and the Helix Bunnies resulted in a win for the visitors by a 6-3 score. The crowning event of the sport program was the bucking contest which was won by Chuck Jennings, a Round-up rider. A band concert by the Athena band followed by a good display of ¿reworks and a dance that lasted until late ended Helix’s big celebration. 50 Years Ago From the East Oregonian July 6-7, 1965 A unique newspaper printed on wallpaper 102 years ago is on exhibit at Morrow County Museum. It provides a vivid picture of southern life at that time when the Union was torn by Civil War. A copy of “The Daily Citizen” listing J.M. Ulysses S. Grant succeeded in taking that city. Sgt. D.C. Ely, a printer serving with the 6th Iowa Infantry, found the type set up and the wall- paper cut. Whether or not copies had been run is not known. The last column is incomplete. Sgt. Ely added a note at the bottom and ran off copies for his company. His own copy was eventually brought to Ione when he settled there following the war. It was presented the museum by Fred Ely, the sergeant’s son. Both are now deceased. 25 Years Ago From the East Oregonian July 6-7, 1990 A brush ¿re near 3lymouth Thursday threatened homes and a school and sent a large cloud of smoke into the air that was visible up to 15 miles south of Hermiston. 3lymouth residents assisted ¿re¿ghters by protecting their homes with shovels and garden hoses as the Àames spread along the edge of town. The blaze apparently started about 4:30 p.m., four miles west of 3lymouth. Fire¿ghters speculate that sparks from a grinder in a junk yard ignited the ¿re. Umatilla Fire Chief Jim Roxbury said his department was called in to assist with the ¿re about 5 p.m. Departments from Richland and Kennewick were also called to help extinguish the blaze and protect homes. Fire¿ghters were able to deter the Àames from the elementary school, but not before the school’s pump house was engulfed in Àames.
