Outdoor village opens at Tamástslikt By TAMMY MALGESINI East Oregonian It takes a village to create a village — Tamástslikt Cultural Institute is seeking help this weekend in the construction of a teepee as part of the outdoor display. Naamí Nisháycht, our Living Culture Village, opens for the season this weekend. The outdoor cultural village will be open Saturdays through Sept. 5 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the cultural institute, which is near Wildhorse Resort & Casino. Each weekend will feature special themes and demonstrations. This weekend, kids also can set up a child-size teepee. Along with the teepee construction, visitors will learn about traditional building materials used. In addition, those present can make their own tule mat coaster to take home. In addition to viewing the structures, during the season visitors can learn about local foods, survival skills, uses of tule reed, the horse culture, and the manufacturing of goods, including the use of string for baskets, ropes, nets and bags. The Sept. 5 event is open to all youths up to age 12. Admission to the outdoor village is free with museum tickets.
