PENDLETON — Hannah Boozer,
Gerardo Chavez, Hannah Wicklander,
Hannah Bradbury and Marti Erice
were each awarded $2,000 Don
Fossatti scholarships by the Rotary
Club of Pendleton. All the awardees
are graduating seniors at Pendleton
High School.
Each scholarship was awarded
in recognition of several factors,
including the students’ academic

ability to achieve success in their

PENDLETON – On May 20, two
Eastern Oregon high school seniors
were awarded scholarships toward real-
izing their dreams of becoming teachers.
Morgen Brown from McLoughlin High
School (Milton-Freewater) and Kiana
Sperl from Pendleton High School were
recognized as the scholarship’s recip-
ients at the InterMountain Education
Service District’s (IMESD) Crystal
Apple Awards ceremony at the Red
Lion Hotel in Pendleton.
The Don Peterson Memorial Schol-
arship is a new scholarship sponsored
by the Umatilla County Commissioners
designed to encourage accomplished
and academically outstanding high
school students who plan to pursue a
Brown
Sperl
career in teaching. Two scholarships,
each in the amount of $2,000, are
awarded — to one east county student
and one west county student.
George Murdock, board chair of
the Umatilla County Commissioners,
said the scholarship is funded from
an endowment given to the county
to recognize outstanding students.
Working with the IMESD, the county
commissioners decided to create a
scholarship for students who excel in
academics since athletics have many
recognition programs.
“We are pleased to support students

and at the same time honor Don Peterson
for his lifelong commitment to education
LQRXUVWDWH'RQ3HWHUVHQH[HPSOL¿HVWKH
qualities we want in those who will teach
the children of the future,” Murdock said.
