SPORTS Thursday, May 21, 2015 East Oregonian MLB SCOREBOARD Elias earns ¿rst win of season BALTIMORE — Roenis Elias didn’t do anything PuFh diIIerently in his ¿Ith start of the season for the Seattle Mariners. As usual, the left-hander disSlayed solid Fontrol, stiÀed the opposing offense and kept his team in the game. This time, however, he got a victory to show for it. Elias took a four-hitter into the eighth inning, Justin Ruggiano homered and the Mariners beat Wei-Yin Chen and the Baltimore Orioles 4-2 Wednesday night. Elias (1-1) allowed one run, six hits and no walks in 7 2-3 innings. He did not permit a runner past ¿rst base until the seventh inning and at one point retired 10 in a row. “Everything went well. I felt real good,” Elias said through an interpreter. “I could tell from the bullpen that it was going to be a good outing because I felt real good.” Although Elias didn’t Seattle Baltimore 4 Local Slate PREP BASEBALL Friday Hillsboro at Pendleton (5A play-in), 4:30 p.m. Hermiston at St. Helens (5A play-in), 4:30 p.m. TBD vs. Stanfield (EOL tournament), 3 p.m. Saturday Heppner vs. Irrigon (at The Dalles, SD6 Tournament), 10 a.m. Pilot Rock vs. Dufur (at The Dalles, SD6 Tournament), TBD and drove in two runs. Hardy in the ninth before securing his 10th save. Chen (1-3) allowed four runs and eight hits in seven innings. It was the ¿rst time in eight starts that the left- hander yielded more than three earned runs. Adam Jones had three hits for the Orioles to raise his batting average to .343. But Baltimore did little else offensively against Elias. “He was working quick, throwing strikes getting ahead early,” said Steve Pearce, who went 0 for 4. “He kept us all off balance.” Seattle used doubles by Ruggiano and Mike Zunino to go up 1-0 in the second inning. Former Oriole Nelson Cruz led off the fourth with a double and Ruggiano hit a 2-2 pitch into the left-¿eld seats for a 3-0 lead. By DAVID GINSBURG Associated Press 2 give up more than three runs in any of his previous four starts this season, the Mari- ners scored only six runs while he was in the game. Not this time. With Ruggiano leading the way, Seattle backed Elias in a big way. “He pitched well enough to win his ¿rst four starts,” Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said. “It was unfortunate that we didn’t swing the bats well for him. We swung the bats pretty well for him tonight.” Seattle built a 3-0 lead by the fourth inning, and Elias — now in his second year in the majors — did the rest. “Any time you put some runs on the board it’s going to help your starter relax a little bit,” McClendon said. “He fed off it and did a nice job.” Ruggiano scored twice Page 3B PREP SOFTBALL Friday Irrigon vs. Burns (SD6 Tournament, EOU), 10 a.m. Weston-McEwen vs. Irrigon/Burns winner (SD6 Tournament, EOU), TBD Pilot Rock winner vs. Union (SD6 Tourna- ment, at EOU), TBD PREP TENNIS Today-Saturday Class 5A State Championships (at Portland), 9 a.m. Friday-Saturday Class 4A-1A State Championships (at Corvallis), 8 a.m. PREP TRACK & FIELD Today 3A-1A state championships (at Eugene), 8 a.m. Friday 5A-1A state championships (at Eugene), 8 a.m. Saturday 5A-4A state championships (at Eugene), 8 a.m. Basketball NBA Playoff glance CONFERENCE FINALS (Best-of-7) EASTERN CONFERENCE Cleveland 1, Atlanta 0 Wednesday, May 20: Cleveland 97, Atlanta 89 Friday, May 22: Cleveland at Atlanta, 5:30 p.m. WESTERN CONFERENCE Golden State 1, Houston 0 Tuesday, May 19: Golden State 110, Houston 106 Today, May 21: Houston at Golden State, 6 p.m. Baseball St. Louis Chicago Cincinnati Pittsburgh Milwaukee West Division MLB American League East Division New York Tampa Bay Boston Baltimore Toronto Central Division Kansas City Detroit Minnesota Chicago Cleveland West Division W 22 22 19 17 18 L 19 19 21 20 24 Pct GB .537 — .537 — .475 2½ .459 3 .429 4½ W 26 24 23 18 16 L 14 17 17 19 23 Pct .650 .585 .575 .486 .410 GB — 2½ 3 6½ 9½ W L Pct GB Houston 27 14 .659 — Los Angeles 21 19 .525 5½ Seattle 18 21 .462 8 Texas 17 23 .425 9½ Oakland 14 28 .333 13½ ——— Wednesday’s Games Houston 6, Oakland 1 Minnesota 4, Pittsburgh 3, 13 innings Washington 3, N.Y.
