Longtime Hermiston res-
ident Duane Chesnut died
peacefully while at hospital
in Richland, Wash. He was
being attended to by his son,
Michael Munoz, when he
passed.
Duane was born in Pend-
leton, Ore., and except for a
short time on the
Oregon coast he
always lived in the
Pendleton,
Mil-
ton-Freewater and
Hermiston area. He
attended elemen-
tary schools in Re-
ith, Pendleton and
Milton-Freewater
and graduated from
McLaughlin High
School in Mil- Chesnut
ton-Freewater the
spring of 1968. He

in Forest Grove, Ore., for two
years.
Over the years he worked
in the tire and front end
alignment business with his
father, spent a short time
pulling green chain, then en-

business, and then found his
longest-held niche as a bar-
tender. While his health had
begun to severely curtail his
activities, he enjoyed rock
cutting and polishing and

and pool tournaments were
his recent favorite activities.
He had many caring and loy-
al friends that appreciated his

mer” sort of attitude.
He was preceded
in death by both of
his parents in 2014.
He is survived by
his son, Michael
and wife Camille
Munoz, and two
grandchildren, Gra-
cie and Mason (all
in Hermiston). He
is also survived by
his brother Ed and
wife Judy Chesnut,
nephew Matthew
and wife Lora
Chesnut, nieces Delaney and
Hazel and stepmother Dee
Chesnut, all of Milton-Free-
water; several stepbrothers
and stepsisters; and numer-
ous cousins, nephews, nieces
and friends.
A gathering of family
and friends is scheduled for
March 29, 2015, starting at
3:30 p.m. at the Panda Inn in
Hermiston, 675 N. First St.
Food will be provided.

Hazel M. Piland, 80, of Hermiston died Sunday, March 15,
2015, in Hermiston. She was born Sept. 1, 1934, in Bejou,
Minnesota. Disposition was by cremation. Burns Mortuary of
Hermiston is in care of arrangements.

died on March 12, 2015, at a
local health care facility in
Pendleton following a brief
illness.
He was born on
March 25, 1921,
in East Bernstadt,
Kentucky, to James
Thomas May and
Rose
(Warner)
May. He would
have been 94 years
old this month. He
grew up in Mil-
ton-Freewater and
the
surrounding
area.
In 1939, he
joined the local Na-
tional Guard before
being inducted into May
the Army on Sep-
tember 16, 1940.

discharged on September 6,
1945. During his time in the

After the war, Bud be-

he worked for many years
before retiring, as the head
custodian at Pendleton High
School. While working for
the school district, Bud met
Lida Jean Downing, who
was the secretary
at Lincoln School.
They were married
on March 8, 1956,
and celebrated their
59th anniversary
this month.
Bud was a char-
ter member and
trustee at Grace
Baptist
Church,
where he attend-
ed faithfully from
1962 to the present.
Bud is survived
by his wife Lida
and two sisters,
Lavelle Scribner
and her husband
Wally and Janis
Handley and her husband
Harry.
He was preceded in death
by his parents, James and
Rose May; brothers Roberts,
Alvin and George; and a sis-
ter, Verna McLean.
Funeral service will
be March 28, 2015, at
