When the new Pendleton Firestone store had
its grand opening Tuesday one of its visitors
traveled 5,673 miles just to attend the affair. He
was Kenneth Gilmore, Firestone representative
from London, England, whose main mission is
to establish a system of Firestone stores in his
country. Pendleton’s grand opening happened
WR EH WKH RQO\ RQH LQ WKH 8QLWHG 6WDWHV DW WKH
time so Gilmore came here to see how it’s done.
He was also provided a look at western America
in the bargain and plans to tell as many English
motorists as possible about Firestone and Pend-
leton.

The Pendleton Fred Meyer store will perma-
nently close its doors May 26 because of low
VDOHV FRPSDQ\ RI¿FLDOV VDLG WRGD\ 7KH HP-
ployees learned of the closure this morning. The
move will put 16 people out of work and will re-
move the second largest real estate owner from
the downtown central core. Stores also were
FORVHG LQ 6DOW /DNH &LW\ DQG %ULJKDP 8WDK
and in Boise. An attempt to relocate employees
with the Fred Meyer chain will be made, though
LWZLOOEHPRUHHDVLO\GRQHLQWKH8WDKDQG,GD-

stores, said spokesman Rob Boley. Employees
will receive severance pay. Fred Meyer moved
into the Pendleton store in 1988. The building
was previously occupied by The Bon Marche.
