PENDLETON — Local organizations are
invited to participate and help the community
prepare for possible disasters during the
second annual Pendleton Preparedness Fair.
A planning meeting is Tuesday at 7 p.m. in
the Community Room at Pendleton City Hall,
501 S.W. Emigrant Ave. For those unable to
attend, another meeting is Wednesday at 7
p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-
day Saints, 601 N.W. 12th St., Pendleton.
The fair is Saturday, April 18 from 10
a.m. to 2 p.m. at Sunridge Middle School,
Pendleton. The event’s focus is to better
prepare the community for emergencies of
all kinds, including natural disaster, domestic

Blue Mountain Alliance meets
Wednesday

group that focuses on protecting natural
resources in the Blue Mountains and
surrounding areas invites the public to its
annual meeting.
The gathering of the Blue Mountain
Alliance is Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at the
Milton-Freewater Public Library, 8 S.W.
Eighth Ave. Membership fees are used
towards education and promoting the
protection of natural resources.
The meeting includes a guest speaker who
will talk about native avian species and their
habitat. There also will be a brief analysis of
the U.S Forest Plan and how it will impact
area counties.

Discussion includes measles
outbreak
PENDLETON — Meghan DeBolt,
administrator of the Umatilla County
Health Department, will discuss the measles
outbreak nationwide and how it affects
Umatilla County during the Round-Up
Republican Women’s meeting.
DeBolt will be accompanied by the
other department staff to answer questions
about the health department and the services
available. The public is invited to the no-host
meeting Thursday at 11:45 a.m. at the Red
Lion, 304 S.E. Nye Ave., Pendleton.

Wellness center opens at BMCC
PENDLETON — Former Oregon Sen.
Gordon Smith and his wife, Sharon, will
speak at the re-dedication of the Garrett Lee
Smith Memorial Library.
Previously housed at the old St. Anthony
Hospital, the library includes mental health
resources for the community, as well as
suicide prevention awareness. The Smiths’
son, Garrett Lee Smith, committed suicide
Sept. 8, 2003, while in college in Utah. The
library was originally dedicated February
2005.
The re-dedication coincides with the
opening of the new student Health &
Wellness Resource Center. The public is
invited to attend Friday from noon to 2 p.m.
in the college’s Morrow Hall, 2411 N.W.
Carden Ave., Pendleton.
The new center serves to provide
educational workshops, counseling, disability
services, suicide prevention and intervention
skills training to BMCC students. The center
offers a proactive approach to well-being to
help students learn to cope during challenging
or stressful times.
In addition to remarks by the Smiths, the
event will include a welcome from BMCC
President Cam Preus, and comments from
Cindy Womack, the center’s director, Ed
Tabor, BMCC board chair, the Confederated
Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation
Board of Trustees, St. Anthony Hospital and
Kim Puzey, a BMCC board member, will
read a poem.

Elks dinner includes HHS
band fundraiser
HERMISTON — A sweetheart of an
evening is offered by the Hermiston Elks.
A Valentine’s dinner of roast pork or baked
salmon will be served Saturday beginning
with a social time at 5 p.m. at the lodge, 480
E. Main St., Hermiston. The dinner, which
costs $14.50, will be served from 5:30-6:30
p.m.
The event also includes a Wine Silent
Auction, with proceeds going to the
Hermiston High School band. The marching
band is raising money for a trip to the
Holiday Bowl in December in San Diego.
The group will perform in the parade as well
as at halftime during the game.
