•A woman at 8:11 a.m. reported a con man claimed to be
with the IRS and harassed her mother, who lives in Umatilla.
The woman said the call came from 202-241-8342.
•An Athena Public Works Department employee at about
8:30 a.m. at North Second Street found spray paint cans, open
paint cans and about a gallon of paint on the ground around
and on a neighbor’s shop, and there also was paint spread over
another neighbor’s yard.
•A Hermiston-area resident at 11:19 a.m. reported the theft
of important immigration documents from her mailbox on East
Punkin Center Road.
•A Pendleton man at 11:44 a.m. told police he has an ongo-
ing dispute with his neighbor on Southwest 42nd Street, and he
found a white substance on the property and dying grass, and
he said he thinks his neighbor is putting something on his grass
to kill it.
•A woman at 11:51 a.m. reported the theft of her 1994 Kia
Sedona from Southeast Division Street, Irrigon. She said the
vehicle was at her brother’s residence for the past few months,
but then she spotted it at a bar in Umatilla.
•A male at about 12:15 p.m. threatened a Milton-Freewa-
ter-area woman over the phone. He called her, said his name
was “Michael” and started calling her “grandma.” She told him
she has no children and therefore no grandchildren.
The male then said he was outside her house and gave her
the address to her home, and if she didn’t open the door for him
he would break it down. She asked for his full name and he did
not give it, so the woman hung up and called 9-1-1.
She told a dispatcher she did not see anyone outside her
home but she was shook up and would like a Umatilla County
sheriff’s deputy to contact her and she asked for an extra patrol.
•A Milton-Freewater woman at 1:15 p.m. reported someone
cut the cables and hoses to her house on the 900 block of Cowl
Street.
•A Heppner resident on South Main Street at 4:51 p.m. com-
plained about three dogs that antagonize his dogs and jump on
him when he is outside his residence.

•Oregon State Police arrested Carl Alan Ward, 64, of Herm-

•Boardman police arrested Daniel Salinas, 23, of Boardman,
for misdemeanor fourth-degree assault (domestic violence)
and on a warrant after a woman at 4:40 p.m. reported Salinas
punched her in the head. An ambulance took the victim to Good
Shepherd Medical Center, Hermiston.

Matthew Charles Miller, a
resident of Hermiston, passed
away on Friday evening, Jan-
uary 23, 2015, at his home in
Hermiston. Matt was 57 years
old.
He was born on August 6,
1957, in Belvidere, Illinois.
He graduated from Minooka
High School in Mi-
nooka, Illinois, and
continued his edu-
cation at the Grun-
dy Area Vocational
Center in Morris, Il-
linois. In 1990, Matt
moved to Prosser,
Washington,
and
then on to Hermis-
ton, Oregon, where
he would settle
down in his home at Miller
Hat Rock in 1999.
He met the love of
his life, Becky Wineland, in
2001 and spent the next 14
years with her happily by his
side.
Matt had a diverse resume
but loved his work in carpen-
try and general contracting.
He enjoyed working with his
hands and often did home im-
provement projects for fun. He
had been with the Washington
Group International working
at the Umatilla Chemical De-
pot until the job ended last
year.
Matt was also very active in
the community and had been a
board member at the Princess
Theater Cultural Center; the
worthy president of the Eagles
Aerie #2647; a board member
of the Hat Rock Water Co. and
the McNary Yacht Club.
His passions were for boat-
ing and collecting all things
nautical, cooking, spending
time with friends and family,
traveling and camping, bird-
watching, gardening, music,
¿shing, and woodworking.
His last trip had been to Illi-
nois to spend a month with
his family there. They traveled
cross country — camping

uary 25, 2015, in Umatilla. He was born Sept. 5, 1938, in
Hermiston. Funeral arrangements are pending at Burns Mor-
tuary of Hermiston.
along the way — to visit his
family back home. It had been
one of the most memorable
trips of his life. Matt spent a
great deal of time on the Co-
lumbia River and visiting the
San Juan Islands every chance
he could get. He also loved the
beaches of Hawaii. He rem-
inisced often about
his time there and
dreamed of return-
ing soon. While he
loved a good adven-
ture, he was equally
as happy spending
time at home. Matt
loved to cook and
garden and almost
always had a project
going in the shop.
Matt was a kind
and loving man and
will be remembered
by anyone who knew him.
His humor and conversation
will be missed by so many.
He lived life to the fullest and
loved without limits.
Matt leaves behind his
mother, Naomi Van Dolson of
Illinois; siblings Mark Miller,
Christina Miller and Robert
(Amy) Van Dolson of Illinois;
his nieces and nephews and
great-nieces and -nephews,
which he adored; his lifelong
companion, Becky Wineland
of Hermiston; and two pets,
Merchant and Twitch. He was
preceded in death by his father
Wallace Miller in 2000 and his
stepfather Raymond Van Dol-
son in 2004.
A memorial service will
be held at the McNary Yacht
Club on February 15th at 2:00
p.m. at 34099 Beach Shore
Drive, Hermiston, OR 97838.

of Walla Walla died Monday, Jan. 26, 2015, in Walla Wal-
la. She was born March 9, 1926, in Los Angeles, California.
Recitation of the rosary will be held Friday, Jan. 30 at 7 p.m.
at the Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home in Milton-Freewater.
Funeral mass will be held Saturday, Jan. 31 at 10 a.m. at St.
Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Milton-Freewater. Con-
cluding services and interment will be in the Milton-Freewa-
ter Cemetery. Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home is in charge of
arrangements.
