The Lkhus aro one of the hitherto
little-known , tribes deserib" d by l
Kalph Henderson, an Aerican way-1
farer, whose -. travel .pictures have !
been appearing in The Rangoon tla-

people live mostly in the Chinese J
province of Yunnan, a wild country
bordering on. the northeast frontier!
of Burma. Jteferring to' their life j
and customs, Mr. Henderson writes: :
"We met Jmure l.ahus than any!

they can get hold of a gun that
shoots forward, instead of backward
or in all directions at once. Kvery
hill man who considers himself of
any Importance at all must have his
gun. There Is a factory in Kengtung
where muzzle-loading guns are man
ufactured. A few carpenters and i
blacksmiths sit beneath a big ban
yan tree and; make them. When a
gun is made, some bold workman
fires it to sets if It will go off. If
It does, it is sold at once.
"But not all hill men ate so for

these 'Hsamtjin' guns: Many of

ilies, and, to save a great deal of
jncntal effort on the part of the par
ents In devising names for their pro
geny, they employ an ingenious
scheme a kind of calendar of
names. They have a cycle of 12
days in their week; dug day, pig
day, rat day, cow day, tiger day, ass
day, death day, crocodile day, sheep
day, pony day, chicken day and
louse day. A child born on doy day
is called Master or Miss Dog; on
rat day, Master or Miss Hat; on
sheep day, Master or Miss Shoep.
"It might bo supposed, that a
child born at midnight (a rather
vague and Inclusive term in a land
child is merely Master or Miss Mid
night. What more flmple! To In
troduce a comfortable amount of
variety, the first born is usually
called Master or Miss First. Com
monly the names derived from the
day is also added, and the result is
such a name as Muster First Ass, or
Miss .Second Tig.
"The child whom its parents ex
pect to be the last may likewise be
called Master or Miss Last. It
must be annoying to the inventors
of the system that there is at least
a modicum of uncertainty in be
stowing the name of Master or Miss
Last on a child. The future can-
without timepieces) would catch the J not he surely foretold, and conse-
baptismal wheen on dead center,
and would be in a fair way to get
two names or none. Not so. The
quently it is not uncommon to find
i ria family two, or even three chil
dren bearing the name Last."

family feud has been raging for years
between the Archer and Stanfield
families which has resulted in several
deaths.
Clyde Archer met h's death Tues
day, August 15. About a year pre
vious young Archer had killed his
an at French Lick, Ind., when he slab
bed itoy Stanfield, a negihbor, who
accused Archer of stealing some mon
ey. He was acquitted in court on a
plea of self-defense.
How Is of Old Standing
The two fumilles had harbored ill
feelings against each other for many
years following the killing of Anna
bel Stanfield by Charles Archer, an
uncle of Clyde. The elder Archer was
acquitted of this crime, and a few
years later a brother of Clydo was
freed of a murder charge.
Back in 1882 Martin Archer wns
killed by a man named Marley, who
was afraid Archer might tell of a lar
ceny job In which the murderer, his
v ictim and John 13. Hunch were impli
cated. This killing aroused the ire of
the Archer family, the members of
which swore vengeance.
The Archers, accompanied by John
Lynch, went in search of Marley and,
being unable to find him, discovered
Bunch. When Bunch declined to re
veal the hiding place of Marley the
Archers bound him, took him to Salt-
Deter Cave, in Orange County, Ind., i
a lonely spot near the home of Tom
Archer.
Here they again demanded of
Bunch that he tell where Marley was
hiding. As Hunch repeated his state
ment that he did not. know the where
abouts of Marley the Archers shot him
to' death and left his body in the cave
several days.
Latr they removed the corpse,
placed it upon a pile of brush which
had heen saturated with coal oil, and
burned it. Then a tree was felled and
placed over the ashes to prevent dis
edvery of the ei'lme.
Confesses to Crime .
Four years later Lynch, conscience,
stricken, confessed to the crime. Fol
lowing the confession Thomas Archer,
