Meat Market Sues.
The Central Meat Market, which
operates undor the style of the Pen
dleton Trading Co., has brought suit
against E. J. Morris in which Judg
ment to the amount of $980.74 on four

Will Poison Squirrel .
Two hundred pounds of squirrel
poison, made of oats, strychnine, sac
charine, corn syrup and other ingred
ients to tempt the jaded appetite of
the rodents, was mixed today by Fred
Bennion, county agent, for use In kill
ing squirrels In the west end of the
county. This region, Mr. Bennion
states, is the meeting ground of both
the Oregon ground squirrels and the
Columbia squirrels also. It Is hoped
by farmers that the poison will prove
effective in eradicating the squirrels.

A poultry meeting will be held on
Tuesday, Marcb 28, at the farm of W.
Ford, of Umatilla, when H. E. Cos
by, poultry specialist of O. A. C., will
address poultry raisers. Reports will
be given on the results of feeding for
egg production. The poultry season Is
now on, says Fred Bennion, county
agent, and hens are being set and in
cubators filled with eggs. A thousand
White Leghorn chicks were received
at the Sturgis ranch at Barnhart to
day. They were ordered from Prosser
by James Stargis and Bob Simpson
and are the escond thousand received

At about, nood today took .place
what Is known as the "vernal equi
nox," one , of the phenomena In the
routine of the sun, which marks the
beginning of .spring, March 21. The
opening of the season was marked by
fair weather In Pendleton. The equi
nox Is defined as follows: "The time
when the sun's center, In crossing the
equator, coincides with either of the
equinoctial points, that Is, about
March 21 and September -22. The
former is called the vernal equinox
and the latter the autumnal equinox.
The vernul equinox signs, in which
the sun appears between the vernal
equinox and summer solstice, are
Aries, Taurus and- Gemini. At each
equinox, day and night are every
where of equal length." " , .

observance of Child Welfare Day.

of the State Child Welfare Commis
sion, who will speak on' the work ac
complished through the commission;
Mrs. Millie R. Trumbull, of the State
Industrial Commission; Mrs. Fred
Schllke of La Grande, a member of
the Child Welfare Commission; Jddge
I. M. Schannep, of the county court,
and Miss Esther Kelly, social service
worker, who is in charge of the Uma
tilla county Red Cross office here.
The musical program will consist of
a children's chorus, a solo by Mrs.
James Hill and a solo by Mrs. David

arid Sturgis Is picking up rapidly and
before long Bob Simpson expects to
have enough work to do , with hi
fancy white leghorn stock that he will
be out at tho company ranch at
Barnhart at least four hours a day.
The second big shipment of baby
chicks to the firm for this season ur
rived In Pendleton today. One thous
and chicks were included In the lot
which was taken to the ranch this
morning-by Mr. Simpson. The ship
ment came from Prosser, Washing
ton. Three weeks ago a shipment of
the same size was received from' an
Oregon fancier. Losses on the first
batch have been very slight. Mr.
Simpson reports, the chicks are thriv
Ing in their brooders ; which were
specially constructed for their care.
