a boiler. While some experiments
have been made with pulverized coul,
yet, no boiler hus ever before been
specially constructed to use it. But
Henry Ford duparts easily from prece
dent In power producing plants, and
once' satisfied 'that pulverized coal is
practical, he ordered special equip
ment designed and built for the new
Power House. ' .
The boiler furnace will consume
eighteen tons of coul an hour. The
coal, which Is ground so fine that It
pusses through an unusually fine
screen, Is tod Into the furnace from
Icear the top. Inside, It Is caught by

an air current which keeps It in cir
culatlon, and it Is burned while in
suspension. It touches neither the
sides nor the bottom of the furnace,

The number of persons in gainful
occupations In 1,710,356. It Is esti
mated that 25 per cent of the organiz
ed workers of the stuto ore out of em
ployment and in excess of 30 per cent
of the unorganized.
The situation has remained almost
unchanged during the past six months.
Gains In some lines have teen can
celled by losses In others.
If all the sea dried up, It has been
estimated that the salt deposit left
would form a covering one mile thick
over a million square miles.

ECHO, Sept. 3. Mrs. Hell Palmer,
who has been quite ill at her home
for a week, left on Thursday night, for
Seattle, where Bhe will receive medical
treatment. Her daughter, Miss Kuth
ryn, has been In Seattle with her
grandmother since early in June. Mrs.
Palmer was accompanied from here by
her little daughter Opal who will at
tend school there this winter.
Mrs. E. P. Sommer's was a busi
ness visitor to Pendleton Wednesday.
Gaylord Madison of Butter CreeK,
was in town Thursday.
Allen Mudgo and family on Thurs
day moved Into the Bert Bullen's resi
dence, recently vacated by the Walker
family, who moved to Montana.
Mrs. Charles Harvey and children
of Portland, who have visited since
Sunday with her sister, Mrs. Elmer
Hubbard, left Thursday for Pendle
ton where they will visit relatives.
