Mrs. Clemency McJJvoy, believed to have been the first' white womnn to explore the Col orado Rockies, Is dead at her home in Arvnda. Col., near here, nt the age ot eighty-six. Mrs. Mcllvoy, who was one of the most picturesque characters that ever blasted the trail through the wllder nesi, endured many privations and hardships In the early daye of the present Centennlel State. The quaint old Indy, who for the lost twenty year has been seen In the old fashioned garden of her Arvada home, rmwklng a large black clgnr and car rying a heavy enne on her arm, was the subject for many a thrilling tale told by the pioneer folks of the village. Lured by the promise of gold in the mountains, Mrs. Mcllvoy and her hus band, equipped with ox tedms, started the Journey West from their Indiana home soon after their marriage in 1SS4. Traveling slowly and encounter, lug inumernble-dangers that msfle long stops necessary, they reached Ciolden in May. 1859. Five years of travel In prairie ar'hoonera nnd on horseback enured tho sturdy feminine pioneer to suffer ing, nnd, while other women remained in, tit village at Golden while their husbands sought for the golden dust In tho mountains Mrs. Mcllvoy disdained the dangers and Joined her mste In tiie Tugged hills, nt that time peopled with Indians and wild beasts, In their starch for the precious metal. ' A vear of prospecting In the vicinity of Golden failed to bring riches to the Jldlvoys and they Journeyed to Mon tana. Here they also met -with disap pointment and returned to Golden, where they purchased land and en caged In farming. - ' " Having no children the couple de- yeloped a love of bof'.- and according to local tradition, bc iered very little With worldly affairs, veritablly burying themselves In their small rural heme.
