Prohibition enforcement officials are divided regarding the admissibility of Cuban "sugar with a kick." The de partment of commerce has learned that Cuban scientists have discovered a sugar drink containing no alcoholic content, but which kicks like a mule. Haynes gloomily declared that the Volstead law bans intoxicating drinks regardless of the presence of alcohol. The government sugar college, seek ing the saleablllty of an oxnrsupply of sugar, discovered the possibility of the drink. HOME, July 7 (U. P.) Caruso re futed the rumor to the effect that he has lost his voice. His recent Illness, from which he Is recovering, has not afTect ed' tho golden tenor. A, c.. met Interested farmers in the Grange hall and talked With them about the hay situation of tho Northwest nnd particularly that of Eastern Oregon. They explained the organisation of Hay t'Jrowers Coopera tive Union now being perfected in the west end of the county and are in hopes that this section of Umatilla county will unite with that body. Not only wiih tho organization explained but alfalfa growing, its harvesting, shipping difficulties nnd alfalfa seed j raising was discussed by both gentle-1 men. Their plan is to return in the near future and sign up growers. Miles with their families spent the Fourth of July at the Miles home cele brating with a picnic dinner. Saunders ar rived -Monday from HazclUm, Idaho kidn and will remain visiting relatives until after Mr. Saunders harvests his wheat crop. Christena Wisenr this week receiv ed her eighth grade diploma, having completed her grade work in the June examinations. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Oliver of Prescott. Wash, spent Monday with Mrs. Olivers parents Mr. and Mrs. John Allen. D. O. Saunders leaves the last of this week for Oakland, California where he will receive medical treatment. Fire destroyed the home of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Fellows who live two miles west of Umnplne early Monday morn ing. The origin of the fire is unknown but It is thought over heating of the kitchen range was the cause. The en tire contents of the building were lost with the exception of an Edison phono graph. Mrs. Fellows had gone to thef garage with her husband who wasjj leaving by auto for town and when she ) returned to the house she opened the kitchen door and found the milium, in flames. There was no Insurance on the liuilding which was owned by P" ton Bros, of Walla Walla. Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Paster left Tues day morning for a visit to Clear Water, Idaho.
