this morning by Judge Joe H. Parkes.
Itev. Cox testified thut he ordered the
paper discontinued In May, 1S20, and
that three weeks later, on June 1, 1V2!)
the paper was sent to him and has

There is less smut than usual
I'matilla county wheat fields says
Fred Bennlon, county agent, who with
H. P. Barass, professor of plant path
ology at O. A. C, visited I'matilla
county fields yesterday. Mr. Bennlon
says that the lack of much smut is due
to favorable conditions for gcrmina'
ing smut spores before seeding time
last year. An interesting feature this
year, Mr. Bennlon slates, Is that some
rust Is apparent in some fields. The
disease la not serious here and will
cause no damage, Mr. Bennlon be
lieves. It is due to tho cool, moist
spring, In Mr. Bcnnlon's opinion.

yesterday as the guests of Mr. and
Mrs. K. F. Averill. They have been

If there is anything that will bring
out the latent foreign vocabularies of
an American in Europe, it is the pass
port nuisance. There are now 113
countries, excluding Itussia, to be en
countered. Belgium has recently taken the lead
in doing away with the visum for al
lied nationals. Trior to this step she
was charging Americans 110, which
many other countries are still doing in
retaliation for the American visum
charge.
It is almost as if each state requir
ed passports visage,d and charged ten
dollars for each, except that the for
eign traveller would be getting more
for his money. With the present ex
change in Austria and Hungary it costs
more for tho passport fee for a two or
three day sojourn than the rest of the
expense of the trip.
From Vienna 1 wanted to go to Bu
dapest over Easter. The Hungarian
Visa cost 7760 kronen! and 500 more
for the privilege of returning to Vien
na. The visa charge was nominally
ten dollars, but as always happens, the
exchange dropped, so that it actually
was about twelve. Then the fare on
the boat, an all day trip on the Dan
ube, was seven hundred Kronen. And
that visa Is good for only one trip. If
one wants to go back a week or so
later the same 7780 Kronen Is exacted.

But that is only half the fun. Before
one can register at a hotel in Hungary
one must register with the police. Then
tho police must be visited again for
permission to leave the country. In
Austria the traveller is allowed three
days in which to register, but must
Ukewise obtain permission to leave.
Even in Italy, where one would think
that thousands of years experience in
government would have taught them
better, the same regulations exist.
And the tourist himself is supposed
to divine ail these nuisances. In Rome
the American consul has been thought
ful enough to have notices posted in
the hotels where Americans are likely
to stay. In other places an American
blandly boards a train and then is
pnllcd off at the frontier. Then is
when the vocabulary comes out strong
est. In Italy, where in point of holidays
the old song about "Every Day'll be
Sunday Bye and Bye." Almost comes
true, the passport nuisance is, because
of the laziness of the officials, partic
ularly irritating. The traveller must
register with the police in each city.
If he Is pressed for time, which an
American always is, he does not enjoy
delaying his sightseeing to mr.ke a first
trip ami deposit a slip benrintr the
usual expurgated parts of his life his
tory, then have to come back in an
hour or so. and then wait another
half hour to complete his resignation.
Then it takes a day to get the pass
ports prepared for leaving.
I was in Ventimiglia. near the
French border on the Riveria, arriving
there on Jlay- 1st In spite of the mess-ed-up
train service. I wanted to leave
Monday morning, but because Sunday
had been Labor Day, the police bureau
had' taken a vacation from Saturday
noon to Monday noon. Then after my
trouble, the Italian guard on the bor
der where I walked across didn't even
bother to look at me, let alone my
passport.
If the vocabulary of the prospective
American traveller is Insufficient to
meet the passport officials, he will find
it comforting to know this in several
languages:
'1 didn't want to buy your darned
country, I just wanted to rent it for a
couplo of days."
