XEW YORK, June 18. (I. X. H.)
I have been reading and hearing (iilte
u bit of comment about occnalonal dis
plays of "nerven'' hy fieurges Carpen
tle rand Jack Dempsey.
Like many othera who are record
ing the progress of the rival boxers In
training. I have vlaitcd both cumpa,
yet no fur I have failed to notice any
thing unimunl in thia way.
From my own experience and from
what I have observed in yeara rf fol
lowing boxing I have never yet seen
a top-notch boxer who did not ahow
la touch of temperament at tiniex and
I fall to aee why uny particular Im
portance should be attached to nurh
a thing.
If Dempney were to plod alonij In j
hia daily routine, Knowing no more
Indlv.'duallty than u truck home, or if
Carpentler drifted along from day to
day with never a flanh of Impatience
taking everything aa It came to him
with the patience of a milch cow then
' there would be reason for comment.
Something would Be wrong.
Dempney nnd Cnrpentter are both
I full of nerves. Certainly they are. If
they were not they would not be
where they are today. They are like
thoroughbred race homes, dancing at
the barrier and eager to tear into the
stretch. The nervoua energy that Is
, in them, with their wonderfully niun-j
cled bodies to obey its command,
makes them great fighters.
Hale Until, for instance, has nerves.
Babe's nervous temperament asserts
itself at the moment he crashes into
.1 baseball for a home run. He is
keyed up, eye, mind and muscle work
ins" In perfect coordination s the
pitch whizzes up to the plate nnd In
the Instant that determines whether
he will swing on the pill or not bin
nervous village Is uppermost.
Nervous energy will be uppermost
in both Iiempsey and Carpentier
July S. After they have received fi
nal Instructions from the referee and
go to their corners, back to back, to
await tiie harsh clang of the gong,
they will both be a tingle of nerven.
I've been there myself and I know.
My visits to Carpentier's camp
have been as pleasant, as uneventful,
In a way. as a visit ton quiet mill
pond.
Oer.rges is o,uiet. quick-witted, fast
to pick up the thread of a conversa
tion nnd withal the very embodiment
of pent up energy, under control. Itnt
on the surface he Is as placid an Mir
ror Lake. That means he is In con
dition great condition.
I have ntudled Dempney more clope-
' ly than I have the Frenchman, for I
have bad more opportunites nnd It
will not surprise me to see, Jack give
more nut ward evidence of nerves on
July 2 than his opponent. I say this
'simply because I believe Dempsey ca
pable of being keyed up to a higher
pitch than Carpentier. It means
i nothing aside from this, nothing in
the way of unfavorable comment as
applies to the champion. Dempsey's
rushing style of fighting Is the best
Indication In the world that he Is a
veritable mine of nervous energy, the
sort of nervous energy that predomi
nates his cyclonic style of fighting. It
. la that same sort of energy that gives
j Carpentier Ills speed and lends the
I snap to his great right hand. Anil no
great fighter could be a great fi.-hter
without it.

Making both ends "meat," as a
Lanky studio wit has it, has been Cecil
L. De Mille'a experience in the filming
of "Forbidden Fruit." his new Para
mount picture, which comes to the
Alta theatre today. '
As originally planned the story of
"Forbidden Fruit" opens with a seen
between the principal feminine charac
ter and a butcher. The locale Is a real,
high-priced butcher shop.
This scene wus filmed an number
one of the picture. Then came a
change In the cast. After some delay,
the production work continued with
numerous retaken. In this retake pru
cesn, one scene was left for the last.
That scene was the one which h id
originally been filmed first, and it whs
located in a butcher shop. And no it
happened that "the last was first and
the first was lust." v
However that may be, the stiidlo
wags had a great time; Such contrlbu
lions aa the following were the ordei
f t the day:
"Here's hoping Mr. I)e Mille makes
a 'steak' out of this picture."
"Ixt'n hope there won't be any 'cuts'
receasary."
"He makes no bones about this be
ing a meaty picture."
And so fnrtji ad lib.
Agnes Ayres has the leading femin
ine rile. Others In the cast include
Clarence Ilurton, Theodore lloherts.
Kathlyn Williams, Theodore Kosloff
and Forrest Stanley.
