"There are more than one-third of
A million Indians In the United WuU,
added Itev. HlKley, "and fifty-seven
distinct languages are spoken.
"A survey among the Indians has
Just recently been made by the Centen
ary officials and shows that not only
the full blooded Indians are Increas
ing, but also the mixed bloods, with
bettor homes, medical attention, and
hotter care of Indlun babies and with
the missionaries taking the goxpel of
titmp sanitation and salvation, the In
crease of the number of Indians will
continue.
"Two-thirds cannot understand the
American language. Thirteen percent
of the Indians are afflicted with tuber
culosis, and 80,000 suffer from tracho
ma. Three out of every five Indian
children die before the oko of five
jenrs.
"There ore 430 Protestant mlsslon
arlea and 2, Catholic with M6 church
buildings with a membership of fi.WO
Protestants and 61.000 Catholics.
"Fully two-thirds of the whole In
dian population Is yet without gospel
privileges whatever, either Protestant
or Catholic. The Methodist centenary
program plans lurgo enterprises
among tho red men."
The following letter from Commis
sioner of Indian Affairs, Charles H.
llnrke, to the Rev. Hlgley was read at
the Conference:
"The progress that has been made
In the civilliuitlon of th Indians and
their present development would have
been Impossible If li had not been for
tho missionaries that were the pio
neers In laying the foundation for the
religious and educational welfare of
these people, and It Is my hope that we
muy have the assistance and coopera
tion of all missionary societies in our
endeavor to hasten the time when all
of the Indians in the country may be
come respectable, Belt-supporting,
Christian citizens."
A second conference of Indians will
fe held at Salem, Ore., on June 2i.

in the Polk street robbery. Murphy
