American re ports of "starving" Ireland hare start ed an argument which has left every one here and nearly everyone In Ire land in some doubt as to the real "low down" on the situation. Britons are agreed Ireland is not Britons are agreed Ireland Is not starving, Americans of the various "Investigation" committees agree It is. In Dublin several months ago a Sinn Fein leader declared to the United Press that Ireland was never more prosperous, and gave Sinn Fein's help for the people as the reason along with the war. which hit Ireland lightly. , An American committee recently re ported terrible destitution. The British government countered wlfh a detailed statement showing un employment to be less than In Eng land, showing the birth rate to be hiKher and the death rate to be low er than ever In Ireland's history, and polnttd tint that elaborate relief sys tems throughout Ireland, automatical ly operative In times of distress, were not being used. Hlnn Fein answered this with a statement that Ireland was In terri ble straits. An American committee devised a scheme of sctt.'ng up clothing depart ments, baby canteens, free kitchens and meal tickets for destitute people, on the Belgian relief system. Itecently the government Issued a statement showing how, despite Sinn Fein statements that Ireland Is famine-stricken, Sinn Feiners in pursuit of the boycott of Ulster goods had de stroyed quantities of food and food sniffs. Nineteen recent raids were cited In which agricultural seeds, flour, bread, groceries .tobacco, machinery, bran, tea, augur, bacon, oats, jam, win, Women's Silk Hosiery $2.00 to $3.50 Big .assortment of high grade silk hose in all the wanted shades well fashioned for fit and wear Women's Cotton Hose 25c to 40c Here in black and white. On the mission would be representatives of Dublin. Belfast, Cork. Limerick and other centers toKether with a representative of Irish labor. Should money be raised for recon struction, the White Cross hopes sev eral Americans will accept member ship on the mission. Although large s-ums have been subscribed for Irish relief, they have not ben sufficient to warrant the adoption of reconstruc tion schemes, as. the White Cross points out, provision is being made for 9000 idle Belfast worker sand their dependants, 13,000 persons whose homes have been destroyed, and !0, 000 dependents of persons interned.
