ASTORIA. May .26. The United
Btntes government today accepted ns a
gift from the people of Clatsop county
tno location at Tongue Point for the
next great naval base on the Pacific
const. W. i. Allison, commanding the
man-of-wur here for the occasion,
took formal possession of the site, In
behalf of tho navy OcpnrUnent, while
civil officials of Oregon. Astoria and
neighboring cities were In attendance
at the ceremonies arranged by H. C
Kciinr.II, commandant of the 1.1th na
val district, und tho Astoria naval bae
commlHluii.
Construction work on the station Is
expected to begin Immediately after
tho formal transfer, as the Initial ap
propriation has already been made by
congress, and a naval officer detailed
by the bureau of dot ks and yards to
draw up the plans and details.
The position of the base, guarding
ns It does the great valley of the Co
lombia, Is considered one of thu most
Strategic In the country. It is located
on the great fresh water bay Just east
of the city boundary of Astoria, is
protected by Tongue Point' and Is
reached by a wide, deep chanenl from
the Pacific ocean, only 15 miles away.
The A:itorla harbor, with Its entrance
depth of 4 2 feet nt low wuter Is the
largest fresh water harbor In the
world.
Present ylans call for the coi.struc
tlon on this great body of water of a
submarine and nlrplano station, which
will bo Increased to n naval base of
tho flint caliber when further appro

Harry F. Hawiey, American consul
here, said today that his seven-year-old
son, recently Injured by a Japa
nese whllo playing at tho consulate,
was not cut In the right arm as re
ported, but was beaten. Tho Japa
nese, who was arrested, confessed.
Tho Japanese entered the garden of
tho consulate and poked ridicule at
children playing there, among them
several Japanese. Mr. Mawicy's son
ordered the Invader out but the Jap
anese pulled him into the street, kick
ed him and knocked him on tho head.
Tho boy wbo fell into the gutter,
meanwhile had defended himself with
a stick. The lad was bruised but not
seriously injured.
