Shorts were driven to cover In the oils, especially Mexicans and rails. To baccos were appreciably higher. Mo tors and a few food Issues were heavy to weak, some of the former establish ing low records for the year. Sales amounted to 656,000 shares. Western railway tonnage figures closed additional declines and brokers of that section reported a dendlock in the investment situation and further uncertainty regarding the business outlook. The local Inquiry for money was slightly more active and that, with last Saturday's moderate deficit of clearinghouse actual reserves, tended to stiffen call money. In the final hour the rate dropped from 7 to 6 1-2 per cent on the ex change and 5 per cent on the open market. The one constructive development of the session was the announcement of the terms of the new French gov ernment loan. Foreign exchange wa reactionary In all Its branches, sterling falling some five cents to the pound frnm its recent maximum. French and Belgian rates fell forty points from last week's closing quota tions and reactions of 8 to 25 points were recorded by most other contl nental remittances, German marks losing only six points. The bond market, including liberty issues, was irregular, though changes were mostly trivial. Foreign flota tions were not materially affected by the heaviness of international ex change. 'Total sales, par value, $10, 175,000. Wlieat Touches New High Itccortl. CHICAGO, .May 24. A. P.) Wheat Jumped yesterday to the high est prices the July delivery has touch ed this season; crop reports were bull ish to a degree little short of sensa tional and buying was on a huge scale, The market, however, closed unsettled. ranging from l-2c net lower to an ad vance of 2 l-2c. with May $1.67 1-4 to 1.67 3-4, and July 1.27 3-4 to 1.2S. Corn finished 5-Sc off to a shade up. oats, down 7-8c to 1 l-4c, and provi sions varying from 7c decline to 10c gain. One nf the chief factors which In duced broad demand for wheat was an estimate from a leading crop expert that the Kansas yield this season would be 35,000,000 bushels less than the government May report had indi cated. Advices that farmers were freely letting go of old wheat failed to check the upturn in values, but con siderable of a reaction took place as a result of selling based on the fact that prices had been on the upgrade for a week and that Belgium and Greece had withdrawn from the market. The visible supply total shrank today to less than 10,000,000 bushels. Corn and oats reflected strength at times but for the most part were low cr. influenced by big receipts of corn here. Provisions had little activity, but at the last appmred to be tending lower with corn an'i hogs. j Wheat Kstimates of i India's Oo J.owcr ! OTTAWA, Ont., May 24. (A. P.)
