at the office of the Commercial As
sociation in which inquiry Is mude ax

Word Was received here today by
Cyril Proebstel, deputy county cleiK,
that hi grandfather ex-Senator G. W.
Proebstel, 1 very 111 at his home In
Weston. For some time Senator
Proebstel lived In Portland but he re
cently returned to Kustern Oregon,
going first to Hot Iiko. He passed
through here several duy ago enroute
to Weston. He is 85 years of age and
it is feared he may not live longer
than a few days.

health over a period of three or four
years resulted this morning at S o'clock
In the death of Charles Smith, a resi
dent of Adam. The wife, Mr. Munda
Smith, and two sisters, Mrs. Harvey
Horn who lives near the Mission, and
Mr. Frank La Fave survive him. A
niece live In Montana. Definite fun
eral arrangement have not been
made, but It is probable that the
obsequies will he held Monday after
noon at 2 o'clock. Tho decensed was
a member of the Cutholio church.

James H. Stuigts of the Pendleton
I Commercial Association for a letter
written by Mr. Sturgis In behalf of
the board of managers In which he
extended the organization's thanks for
the work that has been accomplished
by Colonel Furlong in behalf of the
Kound-l'p und for Pendleton. In his
letter of acknowledgment, Colonel
Furlong declares himself happy to be
of any service possible for the good
"of our town and tho state of Oregon."

The first of a series of six registered
'hoots to be held by the Pendleton Rod
and Gun cub under the rules of tho
American Trnpahooling Association
will be held tomorrow nt Collins' park
between the hours of 10 and 2. The
other shoots will be held during the
Sundays of May and will come to a
close May 29. Fifty targets every
Sunday will be shot, and the national
organization will offer trophies for the
best scores won. A great deal of In
terest Is being manifested in the
events, and a large entry of marksmen
is expected to participate.

A woman flower-thief narrowly es-
I raped capture at the K. K. Haltezore
residence 313 Thompson street, when
residents In the house pursued her aft
er she hnd succeeded In gathering
armloads of daffodils, tulips and hya
cinths last night. The woman is dcscrl'j
ed as young and well dressed, made
her escape by running beyond the
high school. Mrs. Pultcxnro says that
her flowers have been stolen on sev
eral occasions anil that she thought
children were the culpr'ts. She de
clares that In future she will be on the
watch for marauders and If necessary
will use a gun to defend her property.

Visitor Dislikes Treatment.
An objection to the treatment which
he alleges was given him while he was
in Pendleton on his way back home
has been received at tho office of the
Pendleton Commercial Association
from Jim Klrby, an auto dealer of
Holse. In the letter Mr. Klrby recites
that while stopping hero with a carl

traffic officer, removed the license'
plates of the former owner which had
been loaned to lilm for his trip to :
