At last there is a prospect of perma
nent cure ror leprosy, which means
that thousands of outcasts may look
forward with hope to the future. -
After 27 years In the Indian Medical
Service, Lieut-Colonel Sir Leonard
Rogers has announced that his efforts
in medical research work have re
suited In the discovery of treatment
which destroys the leprosy bacilli in
the human tissue. -
Sir Leonard says that while he does
not claim to have discovered an in
..ii&u.e permanent cure, this achieve
ment is nearer at hand- now then it
has ever been before.
"In the cuse of one leper," he said,
"sight was restored after treatment
others have regained the sense or
touch, and in the case of a man who
could not walk two or three hundred
yards before treatment, he can now
walk ten miles."

Sir Leonard explained that for a long
time the only drug known to be oi
value in leprosy was chaulmnogra oil
which is obtained from- the seed of a
tree that grows in the wild in India.
Hut this oil was. so nauseating that it
was Impossible to administer It in
doses large enough to tie effective.
"The first step in advance" said he,
"was made by Ir. Heiser, the Ameri
can doctor in the l'hillppine Islands,
who injected the oil Intra-muscularly,
and obtained an apparent cure in It
per cent of his cases as the result of a
prolonged course of painful injections.
"It, was at this point that I took up
the work in 1915. I obtained a solu
ble sodium salt of the unsaturated
fatty aclde which form the bulk of tne
oil, and I found that I could Inject
this underneajh the skin or into the
veins safely, cansing less pain, and
with greater effect on the disease.
Reactions occurred with the leprosy
bacilli in the tissues, which has never
been done before..
"Owing to the long Incubation period
of the disease it Is not yet possible to
say that any of the cases are perman

Many to Enter Oratorical Contest
Many members of the dramatic class
es and the public speaking class have
made known their intention to enter
the county oratorical contest to be
held in this city May 6. The tryouts
for those who will represent Pendle
ton high school will be held In assem
bly April IS. Pendleton was success
ful In winning this contest last year
and with the amount of material in
the school they should turn out some
excellent - orators.' Miss Elizabeth
Heverence,' head of the English ftc-

Juniors. The seniors had lost but one
Kame and by defeating the juniors won
the championship. The second game
played last evening was between the
rooks and sophomores in which the
rooks took 'the defeat. The girls of
the classes will begin their games
sometime this week. Coach Richard
K. Hanley has refereed the games

cither track or baseball as Pendleton
plans to have teams in both the
