Among the interned vessels was the Potasi of 5,040 tons, one ot the largest sailing vessels afloat. She sailed recently for Europe for a full cargo of nitrate. Essay Contest Announced An essay contest for the schools of Oregon on "What Will be America s Answer to the Cry of Europe's Starv ing Children?" has been announced to the county school superintendent by State Snoerlntendet J. A. Churchill. The contest Ir limited to the eighth grade and the four years of high school for children whose ages are irom u to 18 Inclusive. There are no prises hut simply first, second and third honors. The three 'best essays from each county are to be sent to Fred L. This evening the freshmen will play the sophomores and the Juniors will play for the interclass championship. All three teams are strong and the games are expected to be close. game tonight with the Washington school five, champions of the grade schools. The grade school has strong team and the boys will get a good workout. A game with som town in the vicinity was tried for this week but none was secured. During the Christmas holidays the team will make a trip to Walla Walla where they will play Walla Walla high school, Pendleton expects to have a winning season and several games will be scheduled. New basketball suits have been received and the boys expect to make their playing as conspicuous as the orange and green suits.
