So many Borrows had beset my way I thanked God for the dying of the day. The shadows gloomed above my homeless path, 1 And even Life's rosea veiled red thorns of wrath; And no I cried at Fortune or at Fate; When little feet came pattering to the gate. And lips that leaned to hiss me sweetly smiled And life seemed lovelier for a little child! Copyrighted for the East Oregontan Tub." Co. DO NOT WAIT TOO LONG PENDLETON, along with the rest of the nation, is exper iencing & period of falling prices. The daily papers are carrying news stories of declines and their advertise ments herald price reductions on many lines of merchandise. The atmosphere is saturated with "readjustment' Buying, even at present prices, has not been overly brisk. The public has been pursuing & "hand-to-mouth" policy in pur chases. During the period when readjustments were in order this policy was thrifty. The wise person is he who will see whfn the readjustment has been halted and the low level reached. The story of wheat is not too old to be forgotten. , When it was going higher day by day some sold and some held for still a higher price. When the peak came and wheat started down ward they believed it would come back. It is coming back now but authorities unite in the belief that it will never return to the price level of June and July, .. , Many lines of merchandise have now reached their low level, it appears. When present stocks are sold they will have to be replaced with goods to sell at a higher figure. The public must not expect to find the trend perpetually downward. He who needs and can afford now will do well not to wait too long to buy; it may cost him money. ....... Thus far D'Annunzio's war against Italy has not caused much bloodshed. May the bulls run the bears clear out of the pasture. CONGRESS IN SESSION EYES of the nation will shift from Geneva to Washington today when congress convenes in short session. It will be the opening of trie last congress under the present ad ministration and not only the United States, but the world, will watch proceedings. .- There is much that this session should do but probably little it will do, . The white house is still democratic and the congress republican. Three months hence the change in administration takes place. It is almost certain that America's decision on the league and treaty will be' delayed until after Harding's inaug uration aspresident. If foreign policies are to be put aside, there is still mucli of dAmesfic 'legislation to be acted upon. Farmers of the nation seek aid in financing their crops until they can sell them profit ably. The ex-service men still desire measures of relief. he west asks funds to continue reclamation. Reformers over the nation are after laws to regulate and tor curb. The Mexican question, it is hoped, will be settled. There is work before congress, plenty of it. With recess but for Christmas and New Year holidays and March 4 not far dis tant, it is hard to estimate how much will be accomplished. SCHOOL WEEK SCHOOL week was set aside over the nation to give the peo ple who pay taxes for the support of education an oppor tunity to see of what our educational system consists. The one-room rural school as well as the highly organized city school, will endeavor this week to show its work, its progress and its further needs. Visitiiig a school this week is, in short, a function of good citizenship. The progress of learning has been rapid in the first two dec ades of this twentieth century. The three 4 R's" are still taught but they are but a fundamental. The schools are broadening daily, giving to the growing generation with each year beUer preparation for the game of life. In order to insure continu ance of their program of improvements, they want to show the nation the justice of their plans and their needs. Go to a scr ool oite afternoon this.week and learn what schools today are. f When the Argentine delegate to the league assembly with drew on Saturday, dissatisfied, Senators Knox and Lodge jumped to the front with "I told you so's". 'Give the league a chance, gentlemen, Argentine is but one of 41 members present and doubtless will be back. Fattening cattle in the middle west during the past two win ters resulted in an average loss per steer of from $9.33 to $10.03, the U. S. department of agriculture found. These rais ers fed corn With such findings for the middle west, the loss of local cattlemen, feeding alfalfa at $30 a ton last winter, can be surmised. Give the family a useful Christmas gift by giving a barrel of flour to your household. You will get more for your investment of approximately $10 than w,ith any other gift.. One trade, at least,' hasn't b'eeri'affected by the dullness. The cabinet-makers are busier than ever. I , Pretty soo nit will be possible to buy a $4 pair of shoes for $6 or $7. - Id ' , Moose Head Lake Maint PETE, HERE'S WORD FROM THE WOODS! Certainly slipped on not tipping you that Mr, Bacon invited me to join hit shooting party up here. ' Arrived at his Northeast Carry camp at sunset yes terday. And a riot started before we squared up to the venison steak t Listen, old bull pup my tale's short I Bleak Nixon, chief guide, while unpacking, made the terrible discovery that all the Camel cigarette supplies had been swiped in transit! Never heard such a howl as the whole outfit set up! Nixon swore in Indian-plus-Canuck I Just wouldn't be pacified! Bleak's been rooting for Camels since November, 1915. Says there never was such smoothness, or refreshing flavor, or mild body in a cigarette as Camels provide! (Pete, Bleak is O. K. on that). While the row was on . , what does Nixon do but hop into his canoe and disap pear into the depths of the dark, dank night! About three this morning there was a roar such as no man ever heard in the wild woods! It was Nixon yelling like a double-decked bull moose! That bird had crossed the lake, picked up a trail and beat it to a little way-back store where he got the boss out of bed and made him come across with all the Camels he had. The storekeeper kicked like a handfull of aces but, Bleak always gets what he goes after! It's the nerve,' old tooth! And, now we're all filled with the milk of human kindness and Camel contentment! We'll get game! Peter, think of digging up a bunch of Camels in tha depth of Maine's densest woods ! And, that's the way it is all over the U. S. A.! You're never out of luck when you smoke Camels !
