Eleven candidates were initiated by the Pauline Rebekah lodge aft a special n.eeting last evening. . A hundred members witnessed the event and shared a social hour and light supper which followed. Warrants for officials who served In Umatilla county for the genera' election a month ago today, are ready at the office of the county clerk, that official announced today. There wer 320 Judges, chairmen and clerks ant their pay, together with the mileage paid the clerks who brought the bal lots to the county court house, aggre gate $3097.80. Cut in for Damages Denied. The claim of the O. E. Hold man Auto Co., against Umatilla county foi damages, alleged due to a collision be tween a truck belonging to the claim ant and some county road building materials, was disallowed by the com missioners today. The company alleg ed negligence on the part of the coun ty in leaving a caterpillar and road scarifier In the highway while the road to Pilot Rock was being repaired in September. The truck ran into the implements and was damaged to the extent of several hundred dollars. The burial yesteWay of John Winters recalled to old-time fishermen a tradition of a modern Flying Dutch man and Its ghostly crew that were be lieved to roam the seas In pursuit of a ship that had sent them to the bot tom. Winters was the last survivor of the crew of the Gloucester schooner Charles Haskell, .which In a storm in March, 1869, ran down and sank a Sal em schooner and Its entire crew In Georges fishing banks. He died at the Fishermen's Snug harbor In his 82nd year, repeating almost to the last the tule of the ghost ship of the fishing! Imnks, which was supposed to have! pursued the Haskell throughout Its career, t ' Once off Eastern Tolnt, at the en trance of Gloucester harbor.
