Systematic collection und conscrva tion of waste paper in Pendleton will begin tomorrow when Pcnlund Broth ers, a local agents for the Independ ent Paper Stock Company of Portland, will place collection bags in stores of this city. After collection, the paper will be baled by Penlunds and shipped - i to Portland. Uical merchants wel come the new system as it will save them expense, the present method : being to haul the paper to the city 'dump grounds at some cost. D. H. Benniit, manager of the Port land firm, who Is here today to estab lish the ugency, points out thut the .collection of paper in baks is a step I forward in conservation, lie states that ithe burning of one ton of paper is ieiiual to the destruction of two tons of coal or a ton and a half of wood. He emphasizes also that the bag method greatly reduces the fire hazard, is I more .cleanly and more economical. He jestlmiites that Pendleton should ship la car of waste paper every month. Mr. Hennion's firm, which ships paper to tho Northern Hoard & Paper Co., makers of roofing, boxes, etc., collects 7000 tons of paper a month from Pa cific coast territory and 1500 tons n month from the Xorthwestern terri tory. It is planned also to have the schools collect paper, and if the sys tem Is adoptd schools will receive money for magazines, papers and oth er higher grades of paper. H. E. In low, city school superintendent, will place the mutter before the school principals and if they agree, the chil dren will collect muKazlnes.and papers, und sell them as a means of revenue for school enterprises. It wns the In dependent I'aper Slock Co. which bought the carload of paper collected in local schools last year. During the fall, the company received 200 tons of paper from the Portland schools, 100 from Spokane schools and 300 from Seattle schools. A new $200,000 plant Is being huilt by the Portland com pany for handling the paper: FAHOO, N. D., Xov. 23. (U. P.) Increasing bitterness over the polltl al situation of North Dakota hus resulted today from tho closing of nine banks in the state. Xon-Purtlsan league leaders clulmcd that closing of the bunks was caused by passing an amendment at the last election repeal ing the Non-Partisan law requiring the deposit of all public funds In state owned banks, which were re-deposlled in small banks. l-eague opponents shld the reason was tho failure of grain crops und tho tight money market, attributing little Importance to the withdrawal of pub lic money. - i j i . - HICnUN.
