Bulletins have been sent to teachers

schools, calling their attention to fire
prevention day, which is to be observed
Friday, Oct. 8. All rooms are urged to
devote time that day to fire prevention
talks and the children are to make
home surveys the following day to an

Berrlea and Flowers Crow
The fifth crop of strawberries of
this season 'is being gathered by Alex
Oliver at his home at 1915 W. Webb
street. He has 260 vines and all are
showing blooms and ripe berries. 'An
other Indication of Pendleton's balmy
fall weather is shown in the fact that
honeysuckles are in bloom at the home
f Mr. Oliver, this being their second
blooming this season.

have been in circulation today, it is
reported on the streets. Mr. lugg
this afternoon confirmed the report
that he was contemplating entering
the mayoralty race. Mr. Rugg lives
on Jackson street and has been a
highly esteemed resident of the city

IVir Teams Play Basketball.
The girl's basketball practice began
at the high school yesterday evening
with four teams out for the first prac
tice of the season. Miss Eva Hanson
la' In charge and was pleased with the
first workout. The girls-will practice
three times a week. Within a short
time It is planned to begin the Inter
class games. No teams will be chosen
or games scheduled until after these
games.

Stolen Car Iletnrned
Conrad Miller, of Taklma, arrived
here this morning to take possession
of an Oakland car, belonging to him,
which was stolen at Yakima Sept. 11.
The machine, deserted, was found be
side the road near Riverside after
Round-Up, by Traffic Officer W. H,
L.yday. and two association bucking
saddles, also stolen, were found cash
ed In the grass beside the road. The
saddles have also been returned to the
Hound-Up association, their owner.

Time Changes Probable.
A meeting of the traffic heads of the
O. W. R. N. Co., was held in Ta-
coma yesterday, at which time changes
in schedules on the various lines of
the company were discussed. It is un
derstood that changes are to be made
in. the running time of some of the
main line transcontinental trains pass
)p throuah here which will become
effective about the end of October. No
official announcement of changes has
been made.

Acreage to Bo Doubled. .
Practically all the good Turkey Red
seed grown In this county - this year
will be replanted this fall, according
to. present Indications, says Fred
Bennion, county agent. All the certi
fied seed grown by farmers who se
cured their original supply through
the farm bureau from Wasco county
last year has been disposed, of. A
considerable quantity of other good
Turkey seed which was not field In
spected has been distributed. A car
load of certified seed from Sherman
county will be shipped to Pilot Rock
and distributed among farmers of that
vicinity. Mr. Bennion states that
there la no question but what Turkey
Red la much the best variety for that
part of the country where the rainfall
Is less than It Is north and east of
Pendleton and where the soil Is either
light or not very deep. Among the
boosters for Turkey Red are George
Coppinger, C. A. Moll, Bhumway &
Krause. J. P. Fisher, Chas. Dallas. W.
A. Blusher and B. F. Trombley. In a
good year While Hybrid may beat the
Turkey Red but year in and year out
Turkey is the best variety for the
country south and west of Pendleton.
