Off grade cattle continue under
pressure at North Portland, hogs are
about 15o off for tops while Willam
ette valley lambs are lower.
In the cattle alleys it develops that
poor quality is finding unwilling
buyers. Even the present low values
are unable to force buyers into the
alleys for this clans of stuff. Good
stuff is finding fair favor at prices
printed, but in general there is little
snap to any branch of the cattle trade

lambs with the extreme top for the
day at J8.50. Cull lambs are also low
er. There was another liberal run In

start and some yielding at the close
when traders took profits, the trend
was upward. . Prominence given de

Pressure soon -eased and the market
gradually crept upward on diminished

By early afternoon all losses had
been recovered and many stocks ruled
1 to 2 points .'above yesterday's close.

on by general belief that a big export
business was being done. The market
closed strong 6 7-8 to 6 1-2 net higher
with December 2.44 1-2 to 2.46 and
March 2.47 7-8. Corn finished 2 1-8
to 4 1-2 up, oats unchranged to 7-
higher and provisions varying from
lOo decline to a like advance.
Opinion was widespread that for
eigners were buying under cover in
the wheat trade, and the fact later
developed that the British royal com
mission had 'purchased some wheat
and was bidding for more. Knowl
edge that Great Brnain had re-entered
the market had a decided bullish
influence, and so too did a noticeable
scarcity of offerings. Besides, un
confirmed gossip was current that
South America as well as Europe
was buying wheat In the United
States. In this connection, It was said,
shipments out of Argentina this week
expected to 'be only about 600,006
bushels as against 4,442, 000 bushels
last week.
Corn rose with wheat.
Oats were firm. ,
Dealings In provisions appeared to
be virtually confined to packers and
carriers changing trades from Septem
ber to October.
