PENDLETON WILL KNOW
: . (By Associated Press.)
CHICAGO, July ' Americanism
was the keynote of an address by
Frank L. Rain, grand exalted ruler of
the Elks at the opening meeting last
night of the six day- convention of the
order.
"We put 70,000 men In the service
with'Black Jack' Pershing at their
head," Mr. Rain said. "We erected
two hospitals in France and two in
America, We paid for the malnten-
nce of 20 community houses for the
aid and comfort of our heroes. Our
records show that 1,037 Elks 'went
west. Could any organization have
more cause to be proud?
"We are ready to do it again. The
Elks are Americans first. They will
go the limit for their country. To the
last man and the last dollar, that has
always been-our recor"d."
FULL MILITARY HONORS
WILL BE ACCORDED AT
FUNERAL OF GORGAS
PART OF HAWKER'S
PLANE RECOVERED
An Associated Press dispatch lo the
Bast Oregonian this afternoon from
Washington announced that the. popu
lation of Pendleton will be made
known at the capital tomorrow morn
ing. Considerable conjecture has
been heard regarding the probable
government figures.
Figures taken , by the Pendleton
Commercial Association in Its follow
up canvass ef the city showed a pop
ulation here of 8S2. This Included
itt names which the association can
vassers believed the government had
missed. With those which the govern
ment enumerated and the association
missed it was thought that Pendleton
would show close to 7000 persons.
The government censua for 1910
showed Pendleton to have a popula
tion of 4460. At least a 50 per cent
Increase on that figure Is predicted lo
cally. The government's announce
ment tomorrow Is being awaited with
that hope. . i

ST. JOHN'S, N. F., July . The un
dercarriage which Harry Hawker
dropped from his airplane when he
took flight from here a year ago on
his pioneer attempt to cross the At
lantic without stop, has been recovered
and presented to the Public Museum
for keeping with other exhibits asso
ciated with the colony's history. The
gift was made by W. B. Grieve, M. I
C. who purchased the carriage after
fishermen had picked itt up off Cape
Sa. Mary's, 200 miles southwest from
the point where It was dropped Into
the sea. , . , . ,
When Han ker set out on his trans
oceanic attempt on. May JS, 191. he
flew over the airdrome of Frederick
P. Raynham, almost on the edge of the
coast. Within sight of his arrival,
who was standing by his plane unable
to take off because of an adverse wind,
Hawker cut loose his undercarriage as
a gage to contest for the honors of the
air, and to lighten his load then
winged aw-ay seaward with Ireland as
his object. Raynham, accepting the
challenge, sought to start notwith
standing the unfavorable conditions,
but he was unable to leave the ground
and his machine was wrecked, he was
Injured, and his navigator, Major C.
W. K. Morgan, almost killed. Haw
ker, it will be recalled, flew 1100 miles
before engine trouble brought him
down.
The undercarriage was actively
sought by Hawker's agents and by
others as a souvenir, but search of the
coast and of nearby waters, long con
railed to disclose the wheels

Our lady representative will call

Calumet Baking Powder will do
for you and why it is called the
cook's best friend. ( ' I
) The demonstration and test she will
make are interesting and instructive
The test is not a comparative test of
the strength of different baking pow
ders because the water glass test does
not show the strength of baking pow
der that does not contain white of egg.
The test will, however, show the su
periority of Calumet in other respects
and prove why it has solved all baking
problems in millions of homes. Calumet
is not only the best leavening agent
possible, to make, but it is sold at a
popular price and is therefore an im
portant factor in reducing the high
cost of living.
I Calumet is manufactured in the
largest, finest and most sanitary baking
powder plant in the world, by experts
who make nothing but baking powder.
Calumet received the highest awards
for purity and efficiency at the world's
greatest pure food expositions at Chi- .
cago in 1907, and at Paris, France, in
1912. Calumet contains only such
.ingredients as have been officially
approved by the -United States Food
Authorities.
