Many Offers of Compromise on
Treaty Made by Administra
tion Forces Met With Refus
al by Lodge Forces in Senate
WASHINGTON, D. C. May 21.
Repeated statements made, by Repub
lican members of the Senate that the
President has refused to accept any
change In the League of Nations cov
enant are disproved by the record it
self, asserts Senator Gilbert M. Hitch
cock, who led the Democrats In the
treaty fight. Senator Hitchcock says
that he.hirnself offered five compro
mise reservations' to the peace treaty,
andiftthat they were approved by the
President.
Partisan claims that the President
has demanded the adoption of the
treaty without the dotting of an "I"
or this crossing of a "T", Senator
Hitchcock declares, constitute an ex
ample of tho campaign ot misrepre
sentation Indulged In by treaty oppon
ents. "The President's recent letter."
said Senator Hitchcock, "declared his
devotion tn the League of Nations and
denounced the league reservations.
That Is nil it did. I denounce them. I
will never consent to them and many;
other senators never would, and mill
ions of people never would.
"llut those Dodge reservations were
matched hy reservations on this,
Iiemocratlc side of the "chamber. I
had the honor to offer five reserva-
lions, and they were endorsed hy the j
Preeadent and they were a. tender of i
compromise, on Article Ten I offer- j
ed a reservation which was a com- j
promise. There was some doubt as
to whether the President would accept '
that, but we on this side of the aisle
were willing to stand for it. Tou did i
not accept it. Tet that reservation
was drawn b a former Republican
President of the t'nited States (Will
lam If. Taft) but you refused to ac
cept It. We offered all the compro
mise: the Republican aide offered
none. You refused ail."
