newest residence district, now known
as Astor Court, but formerly called
Taylor's Astoria, is a Pendleton vis

cess. I'matilla county was one of two
OpjUntlM in tlie state to he organized
last October for this new branch of
work and results so far are declared
to be entirely sat Isfactory to the
county committee of 1 7 men which di
rects the work of the secretary, Cash
Wood.
The county work of the Y. M. C.
A., undertaken here and in Marion
county. Is a plan which brings the
fundamental! of the Y. M. C. A. pro
frram to the smaller towns and rural
districts. Secretary Wood explains.
Large buildings, equipment and paid
secretaries such as characterize the or
ganization in cities, are not used.
Equipment already existing, such as
schools, halls, churches, is utilized.
The only salaried officer Is the coun
ty secretary.
Volunteer l'iuleiliip Aids.
Organization and adult volunteer
leadership of the young men and boys
are the factors depended upon for the
success of the program. Iocal groups
of men and boys for mental, moral
and physical development arc sought
in every town and community.
Among t he first things accomp
lished by the organization in this
county was the winning of the older
boys conference for northern Oregon
for Pendleton in October, lJtO. At
the lltlit conference at The Dalles, this
county was represented by 47 dele
gates from seven of the county towns.
Nearly half of the total attendance
was from this county.
I uring t he winter gymnasium
classes were organized at Adams,
At hena and Milton, but Adams was
the only purely successful venture.
Men's gymnasium classes were organ
ized here and have also been success
ful, using the high school gymnasium
! for their work.

j is a permanent organization with its
own membership, by-laws and regu
lations. It has no property nor em
ployed stall anu is not planning on,
any as yet. J! is an association unit,
with I'endlcton using the same facili
ties as the smaller towns, namely, the
build ings, halls and churches having
available equipment. This association
is now fostering athletics between the
tea ins of five Sunday schools in the
city, with junior. Intermediate and
senior teams playing every Saturday.
The father ami son banquet here'
and in five other towns of the county
is attributed to the efforts of the
county organization. In every town
t lie banquet wa a success, Pendleton
having had nearly twice as large an
attendance as was anticipated.
Other work of the association in
the county includes a junior boys
rlub at Kcho under the leadership of

for former service nun. thrift week
promotion and closer co-operation
with the schools of the county.
