The stupendous duties JlJ he faced during; the war. at the peace conference and on his spf-afcing- .our in behalf of the peace treaty broke his health and endan.cfred his life. Yet his duties have not been neglected. From a sickbed he has written importanfmessages and statements. He has named boards to try for a settlement of perplexing industrial question. He has sent clear cut and decisive recommendations to congress. The president's mind is alert and he is entirely capable of handling any subject hon estly requiring his attention. Even Senator Fall one of the most, hart-boiled of the nnti Wilson senators admited as much after a conference with him a few days ago. Mental invalidism at Washington is not in the white house but in congress. The senate has been physically well but men tally bankrupt. For many months the senate has been unable. to see higher than its knees. It has been deaf and blind to the gre it interests of the nation and the world. It has failed to do anything with the peace treaty and the Germans have gotten belligerent again, so much so that Foch has been called to the front once more. The senate has emboldened the enemy and embarrassed the nations that fought by our side for freedom and decency. For months congress has ignored needed domestic legisla tion. The railroad issue has not been settled, a sedition law asked for by the attorney general who wants a weapon with which to fight anarchistic papers, has not been passed. No soldiers legislation has been enacted. Reclamation work has been ignored. The aviation branch of the army has been left without funds. The tax laws have not been revised. Instad of handling big problems congress has talked little things. Instead of discussing the president's message on its merits senators have quibbled over whether or not he wrote it. They have indulged in dark insinuations about the president's physical condition. They have peddled silly stories and pur posely misconstrued high purposes. They have shown animos ity, never a spirit of cooperation, towards the nation's leader. They have had no respect for the sick room, even though death might be near. The opposition senators have shown the same spirit of ruthlessness the Huns displayed when they bombed Red Cross hospitals. They are unfair and unmanly. The atti tude of the anti Wilson senators and of their bootblacking par tisan newspapers has been contemptible and disgusting to those who believe in fair play and intelligent government. They are putting the black spot on the American war record and if they continue they will deserve a double dyed rebuke from an out raged nation. A MARVELOUS JOB WELL DONE plIo packing and shipping enme to a close In Hermiston last wek af ter a run of two months. During that time 41 cnrlnnds valued ot IS7.000, ac cording to the Herald's estimate, were packed and shipped out under direc tion of A. W. rrnnn, who handled the management for the local Fruit Growers' Association. At the last resiil ar meeting of the American lesion at Hermiston, it wa.s voted by the organization to give two dances, one in Jlcrmiston on Decern- her li' and one in Stanfleld on Decem ber 1!. The music Is going to be something out of the ordinary, for an effort extraordinary is heing made to secure a g'-od orchestra or Jazz band from Portland that will put pop in the music and life in the dance. Plans for the erection of a modern business block in Stanficld have been approved by the locnl lodge of Odd Fellows and they have now begun an active campaign to raise the neces sary funds for the construction of the building. It is estimated that the structure will coat about $25,000 when completed, and of this amount $15,- 000 will be raised by the lodge mem bers and their friends and the balance borrowed. AU druggists 25c. as usual. 3N May, June, July and August of 1918 the United States sent 1,121,000 men overseas, making a record that as tounded our allies and which General Ludendorff admits in his memoirs was the one single incident of the war which above all others forced Germany to call for an armistice. The traffic overseas during this period was so intensive that on July 9th, one of the outstanding days in transportation 75 transports were Europe bound bearing 171,670 American soldiers to the battle front. The embarkation for July exceeded all expecta tions, 306,000 men sailing from Atlantic ports in that month. To meet this program the war department had to obtain from the shipping board and from our allies millions of tons of vessels. This represented a battle in itself, a daily tussle in which all interests in the war were seeking all available tonn age and in which the war department won out only because of the vital necessity of geting the men over. Then came the Ger man submarine menace on our coasts and our allies besought us to change our ports of departure. To have embarked our troops from more southern or Canadian ports would have meant serious delay in transportation at this critical time. Real izing the German military authorities would only hope for such a result from their submarine campaign we refused to alter our i&'""Hllllllliilllllllilllliiillilillllllllllll operations and trusting to the navy to send our men from the 13 . middle and south Atlantic ports. It is interesting now to recall II Y - f"rT"l Ct f 1 that not a single transport was .sunk during this period on its. S lHUllttll m outgoing trip. Of the millions of tons of shipping that carried our rnenj overesas going to the war, 44 per cent were American; 51 per I cent were British; 3 per cent Otalian and 2 p er cent French. I The American ships included the seized German liners and 300,000 tons of Dutch shipping were also used. On the return, however, practically the entire transport system was Ameri can, more than 80 per cent of the ships used in demobilization being furnished by the shipping board.
