to Major f.encral Harnett, command

of peculiar significance as. in the
opinion of many officers here, 11 war
tho stand of the Americans atom,
this lino which saved Paris. The
of the writer is not disclosed.
The Americans were rush'-d to the
line in motor trucks to support the
hard-pressed French nnd on Juno 1
the marine brigade deployed on a
support position, the battalion com
manded by Major Thomas Holcomb
hurrying into line ns the men climbed
off the trucks. The Hermans were
cnniliiK on and on June 2 the French
dropped back. passing through the
American lines.
"We hnd Installed ourselves in a

"They were driving nt hill Itili

and It seemed pcrfoct sulcihe for them
to try. Yon couldn't begrudge a

"Then, under that deadly f'.re, and
r barrage of rlflo and machine gun
fire, the Uocho stopped. It was too
much for any men. They burrowe
in or broke to the cover of !ho woods
and vou could follow them by the
ripples of the green whlto as they
raced for cover-' .
Tho writer declares the rifle fire
of the marines amazed the French
who saw it. '
"That men should fire deliberately
an use their sishts and adjust their
range." he says, "was beyond their
experience. It must have had a tell
ing effect on the morale of tho Roche,
for It was something they had not
counted on. As a matter of fact,
after pushing back tho weakened
French and then running up against
a sllonewall defense they were lib

from prisoners, . for the Germans
never knew we were In the front line
when they made that attach. They
w-ere absolutely mystified at the man

were ln line. ' -r
Fighting Followed.
The letter tells ln detail of the days
of fighting that followed. It de
scribes a daylight charge against a
machine gun host and of scouting
raids up to. June 6, when the whole
brigado swung forward, to straighten
out the line. This action resulted in
the capture of llallcau wood.
Maor Sibley's battalion of the sixth
marine - regiment led tho way here
with Holcomb In support- The woods
were alive with enemy machine guns.
That night word came back that Rob
ertson had taken Hourcsches. break
log through a heavy machine gun
barrage to enter tho town. Robert
son, fighting with an automatic in
each hand, was hit three times before
he would allow himself to bo taken
to tho rear.
Speaking of individual acts of brav
ery, the writer says IHincan. a com
pany commander, "before he was
mowed down, had his pipe In his
mouth and was carrying a stick."
"Later." he adds, "Dental .Surgeon

PORTLAND, Aug. 21. Robert Mc
Crow showed the "bunch'i. a, few
things about what an old timet could
do In the cattle trade. He brought
forth a load of some extra good stuff
from the Klickitat country and by a
single swoop established a new high
record for steers with a sale of 18
head at $13.50.
This again gives to Portland the
honor of paying more for cattle than
has ever before been paid in any rec
ognized livestock market along the
Pacific coast.
Not only did the Klickitat shipper
gel a record price for steers, but some
cows he brought forward were quick
