Want Money For Horse Show.
A delegation representing the t'nia
tilla County Horse and Mule Breeders
association Wednesday requested the
county court for an appropriation to
assist in putting on the annual show
vhich is to be held some time in Oc
lobe. The court has the matter un
der advisement.
Water Mains Break.
While plowing up North Main
street yesterday morning, prepara
tory to grading and paving, work
men struck water mains with their
plows with the result that there were
small-sized water apouts for a time.
Gas mains and laterals were also
broken and kept the repair men
busy.
Mother Died In California.
W. It. Anderson. Jr., of Milton was
Pendleton yesterday and left on
No. 17 for Portland to meet the bod
of his mother who died Tuesday night
at Oakland, California, where she hud

panying the body north. The deceas

mittee handling the auto trip to Mil
ton for Strawberry Pay June 12
that neople from Adams. Athena
and Weston are invited to Join in the
procession as it moves through their
towns. A total of 29 local cars ha'e
already been signed up for the trip
and 60 are wanted. The care will
stop on top of the hill south of Mil
ton and form a procession into the
east end town The proceed from
Strawberry pay are to go to the Red
Cross.

Officer Peter Hwartx, in charge of
the naval recruiting station, this mor
ning received notice that hereafter all
applicants for admission to the navy
who are between the ages of 21 and
31 must produce thir registration
certificate.

Krnest Streckler. wh.i has been
working on the F. A. Maker place near
Stanfield, was brought to Pendleton
this morning suffering with a broken
knee-cap as the result of a fall from
a hack. He Is ut Ht. Anthony's hospital.
Wanted at Im ; ramie.
Sheriff T. O. Taylor yesterday plac
ed under arrest Bernard Orton, who
has been working on a ranch near
Pendleton and who is wanted at I-u
Grande on a felony charge. He was
taken to La Grande this morning by
a I'nion county deputy.

Freewater Cherry Day is in the off
ing. IVputy Sheriff J. H. West who
is here today brings word that June
27 has been set as the date for th
annual festival and that there will be
n abundance of cherries to make
the affair a success.

John Wilson was brought to the
county jail this morn i it u by Deputy
Sheriff Went of Five water, having
been bound over to- th- grand Jury
under JL'tia bonds on a charge of
stealing cow hides from the Van Slyke
slaughter house on the night .f t he
fifth. The hides were recovered.

The total number of registrations
for the army draft in this county was
jumped to I!.,. today when 29 more
cards came in from eligible residents
temporarily? absent. The local board
has a big job on its hands inasmuch
as a duplicate must be made of each
card and all reports must be made ou
in triplicate.
Three Knllt In Navy.
Three more enlistments in the navy
at the local recruiting office w;re re
corded yesterday. George William
King. Joseph Claude Miller and Man
lon Brue Gilbert, all of whom have
been working hereabouts, enlisted In
the engineering branch and have al
ready left for Portland, fjeo Knight,
who recently enlisted has also left for
Portland.
