Arey was born in Rock Falls. III..
and grew up there. Probably his first
stage appearance was as one of the
grave diggers In "Hamlet." The the
ater was over a stsble. There was no
trap-door la the stage so they cut a
hole and let hira stand on a load of
hay in tbe barn beneath, leaving him
exposed from the waist up to the au
dience. It is reasonable to suppose that It
